Over the next few months, and especially in 2026, we’ll see a lot of highly anticipated sequels. Fans have been expecting many of these for a long time. A good example is Grand Theft Auto 6. Even though Grand Theft Auto 5 came out in 2013 and we hadn’t heard anything new for over ten years, everyone knew another installment was inevitable, given how successful the original game was. It would have been surprising if Rockstar hadn’t continued the series.
Some recently announced sequels were unexpected, and even more surprising are the ones that already have confirmed release dates. Many fans had given up hope of ever seeing these games, so the question now is whether the long wait will be worth it. Let’s take a look back at their history and get a preview to find out.
Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault
Shopping For Rogues
- Planned Release Date: 11/19/25 (Early Access PC)
- Planned Systems: PC and Xbox Series X/S
Released in 2018, Moonlighter was a unique game that blended the challenging gameplay of roguelikes with the relaxing elements of a shopkeeping simulator. Players explored dungeons to collect items, then returned to their shop to sell what they found, or use it to create better equipment. Even without any further development, it was a complete and enjoyable game, and its creator, Digital Sun, has continued to make games since.
The announcement of Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault was a welcome surprise, as it seemed the developers had started a new project. The core gameplay players enjoyed in the first game is returning, but now with the added benefit of 3D graphics instead of the original’s 2D, top-down view. Moonlighter 2 will be available in Early Access soon, and fans are eager to try it out.
Kirby Air Riders
A Smash Style Racer
- Planned Release Date: 11/20/25
- Planned Systems: Switch 2
Kirby Air Riders was revealed earlier this year and is slated for release just a few months later. This is a remarkably quick development cycle, especially considering the first Kirby Air Ride game came out in 2003 for the GameCube.
Both games are racing games featuring characters from the Kirby series, but the second one is significantly more detailed. It includes new characters, different vehicles, and the ability to battle opponents while racing. It feels a lot like a spin-off from Super Smash Bros. and could be a strong competitor to Mario Kart World as a racing game exclusive to the Switch 2.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
Samus Returns
- Planned Release Date: 12/4/25
- Planned Systems: Switch and Switch 2
Originally revealed as a Switch game back in 2017 when the console first launched, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has faced many delays. After a long wait and a change of development teams, it’s now scheduled to release on both the Switch and the new Switch 2 in December 2025. Though there have been other Metroid games and spin-offs in the Prime series, fans hadn’t seen a main installment in over ten years.
Fans of the first-person perspective Metroid Prime series had a long wait for Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, which came out for the Wii in 2007. This sequel takes the action beyond just fighting space pirates, adding a large world to explore on a motorcycle and giving Samus new psychic abilities.
Onimusha: Way Of The Sword
Cut Demons Down
- Planned Release Date: 2026
- Planned Systems: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S
Unlike the first and third games, most Onimusha titles tell self-contained stories, much like the Final Fantasy series. Fans have been eagerly anticipating the next installment, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, ever since the PlayStation 2 era. While Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, released in 2006, received positive reviews, Capcom decided not to develop further games for newer consoles.
While there were a few mobile games and updated versions over the past twenty years, fans had been hoping for a completely new installment. Onimusha: Way of the Sword appears to be a grittier and more action-packed experience than the original PlayStation 2 games, suggesting it might be the fresh start the series needs when it releases in 2026.
LEGO Batman: Legacy Of The Dark Knight
Brick By Brick
- Planned Release Date: 2026
- Planned Systems: PC, PS5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S
The last dedicated LEGO Batman game was LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, released in 2014. While Batman appeared in the LEGO Dimensions game starting in 2015, and there was a LEGO DC Super-Villains game in 2018 focusing on the bad guys, there hasn’t been a proper LEGO Batman adventure until now. That’s what makes LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight so exciting.
This new game is essentially a fresh start for the series, but also a way to honor everything that’s come before – including the live-action Batman films directed by Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan. Legacy of the Dark Knight will be a much larger experience, featuring a sprawling city to explore, a variety of playable characters, and a dynamic combat system reminiscent of the Batman: Arkham games.
Scott Pilgrim EX
Save Canada From Invaders
- Planned Release Date: 2026
- Planned Systems: PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S
Scott Pilgrim EX feels like a continuation of the 2010 game, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game, which itself was inspired by the movie. Both the movie and the original game were popular with comic book fans. While the original game was briefly unavailable, it came back in 2021. Then, in 2023, Netflix released a new animated series called Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, offering a fresh take on the story.
The upcoming game, Scott Pilgrim EX, continues the story from the original comic, but with a new challenge: Scott and his friends will battle creatures from other dimensions. Like the first game, it will be a beat-‘em-up where you explore a world map, fight enemies, and improve your character by purchasing items or eating food.
Fable
A Comedic RPG Rises From The Ashes
- Planned Release Date: 2026
- Planned Systems: PC and Xbox Series X/S
Given Microsoft’s history of canceling games still in development, it’s uncertain whether Fable will be released in 2026, or even if it will be released at all. They previously canceled Fable Legends, a major game in the series, back in 2016.
While the card game Fable Fortune came out in 2017, the last major Fable game was Fable 3 back in 2010. The upcoming reboot looks promising, offering a large open world, the series’ signature quirky humor, and exciting combat. And with Richard Ayoade involved, it’s sure to be funny – everyone loves his deadpan style!
