Urgent Alert for Windows 11 Users: Security Updates at Risk!

Summary

  • Microsoft issued a warning that users who installed Windows 11 24H2 via a CD or USB drive may not receive security updates.
  • This problem only affects users who installed Windows 11 24H2 on bootable media with either the October or November 2024 security patches.
  • The fix for the Windows 11 24H2 issue is to reinstall the OS and ensure the December 2024 security patch is included.

At the start of February, Microsoft alerted some Windows 11 users who installed the 24H2 update via a bootable USB drive or disc that they would miss out on future security updates. Microsoft advised these users to resolve the issue by re-installing Windows 11 version 24H2, making sure it incorporates the December 2024 security updates instead of the October or November 2024 update files.

First introduced in October 2021, Windows 11 is the most recent version of Microsoft’s PC operating system and the successor to Windows 10. As Windows 10 will no longer receive official support from October 2025, some users have opted to switch to Windows 11 to continue receiving new features and security updates. However, the gaming community has experienced varying opinions about Windows 11, as titles from the Assassin’s Creed series encountered performance issues related to the Windows 11 version 24H2 update. This update was rolled out in October 2024, three years after the global launch of Windows 11.

It seems there’s been an issue with installing Windows 11 version 24H2 using certain methods, such as the Media Creation Tool and a bootable USB flash drive or CD, which might prevent you from receiving future security updates if the installation media contains either the October 2024 or November 2024 Windows security updates. However, this problem doesn’t affect installations done with updates from December 2024 or later. To resolve this issue, Microsoft advises reinstalling Windows 11 24H2 on a media drive that includes the December 2024 security update or later, not the October or November updates. During the reinstallation process, you can choose to either keep your existing files or perform a clean installation of the OS.

Windows 11 24H2 Security Updates May Not Work for Specific Users

On previous occasions, Microsoft has encountered user displeasure due to a significant Windows 11 update affecting game performance negatively. Fortunately, this recent issue only impacts those who install system updates for Windows 11 in methods other than the Settings app or the Microsoft Update Catalog website – even users who downloaded the troublesome October and November 2024 security patches fall into this category.

After three years since its release, Windows 11 has been validated as compatible with devices such as the Meta Quest 3 VR headset. As Windows 11 moves forward in development, we’ll have to wait and see which new features will emerge in 2025.
