Uzumaki Anime Reveals Official Trailer and Release Date

Adult Swim has finally unveiled a fresh trailer for the eagerly anticipated anime adaption of Junji Ito’s Uzumaki, set to air on September 28th, Adult Swim. Ever since its announcement at Crunchyroll Expo 2019, fans have been anxiously waiting for a full trailer and release date. The animation studio, director, and composer have now been confirmed, but after such a long wait, there was only a brief teaser featuring Kirie Goshima, the main character from the manga. After five years of silence, Junji Ito’s chilling masterpiece will make its way onto Adult Swim on September 28th, and it will be available on HBO Max the next day

Together with Tomie, Uzumaki stands as one of Junji Ito’s most acclaimed pieces of work. The story focuses on Kirie Goshima, a young girl, and her boyfriend, Shuichi Saito, residing in the town of Kurouzo-cho. This town is afflicted by a strange occurrence called the “Spiral” phenomenon. Various spiral-themed supernatural events take place in this small community, gradually escalating to cosmic-horror levels of misery. Other works by Ito have been transformed into anime, yet they’ve received mixed or generally negative feedback. However, Uzumaki aims to overcome this pattern and successfully adapt Ito’s unique style into an animated form

At Crunchyroll Expo in 2019, it was revealed that the highly praised horror manga “Uzumaki” by Junji Ito would be turned into a 4-episode anime series. The studio behind the project is Studio Drive, with Hiroshi Nagahama, known for directing “Mushi-Shi” and “Flowers of Evil”, taking the helm. Production I.G USA will produce the series, while Colin Stetson, from “Hereditary” and “The Menu”, will create the soundtrack. In an interview with Junji Ito, he mentioned that the script was already completed and he had reviewed it. The anime is expected to stay true to the original manga, and director Nagahama has proven his talent

Spirals Hold A Secret Power

The trailer showcases the breathtaking animation produced in black and white as promised before. It shows several clips of some of the most famous arcs, like “The Spiral Obsession”, “The Snails”, “The Mosquitoes” and “The Scar”. These are perhaps the 4 arcs that the 4 episodes will cover, although it is unknown how the story will be rearranged for the adaptation. The series seems to implement a mix of 2D and CGI animation, while the black-and-white art seeks to faithfully adapt the original manga.

The music created by Colin Stetson adds to the mysterious vibe of the narrative. Characters Kirie and Shuichi are portrayed by Uki Satake and Shin-Ichiro Miki. Satake starred as Tsubomi Takane in Mob Psycho 100, while Miki is well-known for his roles as Kisuke Urahara from Bleach, Roy Mustang from FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood, and Zamasu in Dragon Ball Super

Following multiple production setbacks caused by technical problems and the COVID-19 outbreak, Uzumaki’s anime version is now set for release in Japanese language with English subtitles on Adult Swim. The debut will take place the following day on HBO Max. It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Cartoon Network has been part of a Japanese series production process. Studio Drive has assembled an expert team to deliver a faithful adaptation of Junji Ito’s work, paying close attention to detail and staying true to the original manga. Here’s hoping the show’s success will pave the way for more adaptations, such as Tomie
