Following Valve’s recent trademark filing for “Steam Frame,” new signs point towards an upcoming announcement of a new VR headset – a sequel that’s been anticipated for years. Valve’s original VR headset, the Valve Index, launched in 2019 and remains highly respected as a top-tier VR device.
Fans were buzzing in early September when they noticed Valve had trademarked “Steam Frame.” Many thought this hinted at a new range of gaming hardware from Valve, or possibly the name of the long-rumored SteamOS-powered console the company was developing. Now, it appears “Steam Frame” is probably related to the next version of the Valve Index, and we might find out more about it sooner than expected.
VR Content Creators Hint at Announcement Coming Soon
Recently, VR fans on Reddit have noticed that several popular VR creators are suggesting something big is happening on Wednesday, September 17th. Many of these creators have traveled to Seattle, near Valve’s headquarters. For example, NathieVR posted on X that he’s in Seattle without explaining why, and Habie147, a well-known VR YouTuber, mentioned a “special report” coming that Wednesday. With these hints, many fans are now speculating that Valve will finally announce the next version of the Valve Index, previously known as Deckard.
Considering Valve’s tendency to unexpectedly release new products, many believe they will soon announce – or even suddenly launch – their next virtual reality headset. They previously revealed a VR headset in a similar way, with a new website appearing before the official announcement, though some information had leaked beforehand.
Recent leaks suggest the new Steam Frame VR headset will cost around $1,200 and should be available before the end of 2025. The package will likely include a new set of controllers, known internally as “Roy,” which were first spotted online last year. There’s also talk that Steam Frame will allow users to play regular Steam games, normally played on the Steam Deck, in a virtual reality environment.
There’s a lot of buzz in the VR world about a potential new Valve Index headset – possibly called the ‘Valve Index 2’ – and many are wondering if Valve will reveal it on September 17th. If the rumors are accurate, this could be a big moment for virtual reality gaming, and it might signal a shift for Valve and Steam, potentially leading them to create a more complete gaming experience for players.
