Valve, the company behind the popular Steam Deck, has surprisingly announced a new Steam Machine, a console designed for home gaming using their SteamOS. This isn’t Valve’s first attempt at a home console; they previously released a Steam Machine in 2015, but it didn’t sell well and was largely removed from Steam’s store by 2018.

It’s a bit surprising to talk about a previous failure when you look at how incredibly well the Steam Deck has done. That little device – and now the upgraded Steam Deck OLED – really kicked off this boom in portable PC gaming we’ve seen lately, even convincing Microsoft to jump in with the ROG Ally. But the Steam Machine we’re discussing now? It’s aiming for something totally different. It’s not competing in the handheld space at all; it’s a whole other beast.

As a huge Steam fan, I’m really excited about the new Steam Machine! Valve says it’s over six times more powerful than the Steam Deck, which is incredible. They’re aiming for 4K gaming at a smooth 60 frames per second, with features like ray tracing for amazing visuals. It’s built around a custom AMD processor and uses AMD’s FSR technology to boost graphics and performance. While it won’t have DLSS, the FSR should still deliver a great experience. One of the coolest things about the Steam Deck is how it smartly manages its memory and power, and I’m really curious to see how that kind of optimization will be handled in this more powerful machine.

As of now, Valve hasn’t announced the price of the Steam Machine. The previous version had a wide price range, starting at $499 for the basic model and going up to $6000 for the high-end versions. This time, there will be two versions available—one with 512GB of storage and another with 2TB—suggesting different price points. Valve hasn’t set a specific release date yet, but they expect to ship the hardware in early 2026. You’ll be able to buy the console on its own, or as a package that includes the new Steam Controller.

The gaming world, and Valve along with it, have evolved significantly since 2015. Valve now has more experience successfully releasing hardware, which should lead to a better experience for players and stronger sales. PC gaming is also far more popular now than it was in the 2010s, thanks to exciting and innovative independent games. Combined with improvements to SteamOS – a key weakness of the original Steam Machine – these changes could help the new product line succeed where the first one struggled.
