Valve is changing things up in the handheld gaming market by discontinuing the original, more affordable Steam Deck model with the LCD screen. Gamers noticed a recent announcement on the Steam Deck store indicating that the remaining units represent the last of this version.
We could add the 256GB LCD model to our cart when we checked, but it’s unclear how many units Valve still has available.
OLED or Bust
Soon, the Steam Deck will only be available as the OLED model, starting at $549 for the 512GB version. This is more expensive than the current LCD model, which costs $399.
The OLED model is definitely an upgrade. It boasts a larger, higher-quality screen, improved connectivity, a bigger battery, and even a longer charging cable, plus a few other enhancements.
It’s not surprising Valve is stopping production of the original Steam Deck with the LCD screen. Many people thought they’d offer a discount to sell the remaining units, especially with the Steam Winter Sale happening and the holidays approaching. If they have stock left, a clearance sale would make sense!
I remember when I first heard they were stopping the 64GB LCD Steam Deck last year – it was a bummer! But Valve did a nice thing and gave everyone a 15% discount before they stopped selling it, which gave me a chance to snag one before it was gone.
If you visit the Steam store online to buy a Steam Deck, you’ll notice a disclaimer in the fine print.
We’ve discontinued the 256GB Steam Deck LCD model. Once our current stock is gone, it won’t be available for purchase anymore.
I’m really excited about what Valve is doing next! They just announced the Steam Machine, and it sounds amazing. It’s basically trying to give you the best of both worlds – the power of a gaming PC combined with the simplicity of a console. It could be a total game-changer!
The product is expected to launch in 2026, but the price hasn’t been finalized yet.
