As a lifelong comic book enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous shared universes, I can’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu when I look at Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). It’s like watching a train wreck in slow motion – you know it’s going to happen, but you can’t look away.
The Last Dance” has made enough money to keep it running, which means there will be more movies like “Morbius” and “Madame Web”. Despite the criticism and dislike for “Venom 3”, Sony continues to develop the franchise, possibly aiming for something grander, similar to Marvel’s Avengers. The main villain of their upcoming projects is Knull, who serves a role somewhat like Thanos in Marvel’s universe.
The SSU serves as a testament to the numerous potential pitfalls that Marvel Cinematic Universe might have encountered. Despite being a powerhouse in entertainment now, Kevin Feige’s ambitious venture was never guaranteed success. If the initial movies had flopped, or if the early castings didn’t pan out, or if The Avengers hadn’t been as captivating, the entire project could have crumbled. This doesn’t imply that the films would have ceased production entirely; they would likely have continued being produced, albeit with lower quality. Sony provides a glimpse into these possible setbacks.
Who is Knull?

In the 2010s, Knull, a being of cosmic dread, entered the Marvel Universe. When Gorr the God Slayer obtained the All-Black the Necrosword, a potent weapon capable of slaying gods, he took it from an as yet unnamed entity of darkness. Over time, Knull’s identity was gradually revealed in several solo Venom comics before becoming the main antagonist in a Silver Surfer series and the King in Black event. Knull is a god-like figure of darkness who has existed since before the enigmatic creation of the current cosmos. It’s believed that he emerged when whatever preceded modern cosmology was destroyed. A deity in the void, Knull faced a sudden awakening when the Celestials used the “Light of Creation” to construct a new reality. They offered Knull a place in this cosmos, but he refused and crafted a weapon that could destroy them. The Celestials banished Knull, leaving him to create his most powerful creations, the symbiotes. Driven to plunge the universe into darkness, Knull poses an existential threat at the highest level of Marvel’s rogues gallery.
Could Knull be Sony’s Thanos?
Essentially, Thanos had been a significant character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe even before he became the main antagonist. From small appearances at events to brief cameos and finally his full introduction in Guardians of the Galaxy, Thanos was gradually built up. He hinted at his intentions to take over in Age of Ultron and had a significant role before Infinity War, making it essentially “his” movie before others. Thanos posed an existential threat that affected several key aspects of Marvel’s Infinity Saga. However, the issue with Thanos is that people often overlook the gradual build-up leading to his central role compared to his initial introduction as a character.
In “Venom: The Last Dance,” the creators are trying to establish Knull in a similar way as Marvel built up Thanos across multiple films. This makes the third Venom movie comparable to the Avengers series for the Symbiote Spider-Man Universe (SSU). However, unlike Thanos who was gradually impacting lives before his debut, Knull has been trapped in an earlier era and hasn’t had any direct influence on anyone outside the Venom cast. While Knull could potentially be a main antagonist, his portrayal might not match up to Marvel’s intricate character development.
Does Sony have a team to fight Knull?
Since “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”, Sony has been striving to launch a movie centered around the infamous “Sinister Six”. This is the grand conclusion they envisioned for their series of villain films, similar to the ensemble in the “Avengers”. There’s a lot of talk that the studio is still pushing towards this goal. However, their current lineup leaves much to be desired. An ideal Sinister Six Universe (SSU) team might include Venom (or one of the other symbiotes from the trilogy), Morbius, Madame Web, Kraven, and possibly Michael Keaton’s character, Vulture. This doesn’t make for a very impressive roster. Another possibility could be a movie focused on symbiotes, where various multi-colored characters (with Carnage being an exception) might team up to battle Knull. At the moment, it seems like a rather grim prospect, especially since only the “Venom” movies seem to generate any profit for Sony.
If Sony continues its efforts to establish a connected universe for some time, it’s likely they’ll reconsider making the “Sinister Six” film. This movie would feature a formidable group of villains requiring an extraordinary adversary. Knull could fill that role, yet he lacks many of the qualities that made Thanos so compelling. He offers excitement and presents a reasonable level of peril, but Thanos was more than just a powerful purple character. It wouldn’t be shocking if Sony attempted to emulate Marvel’s success, only to fall short in their efforts.
