Vermintide 2: Best Characters for Legend & Cataclysm

Legend and Cataclysm difficulties in Vermintide 2 are incredibly challenging. Enemies hit much harder, you’ll find fewer healing items and other resources, and you need to be constantly aware of your surroundings – even a single weak enemy can quickly defeat you. But overcoming these challenges is very rewarding. If you want the most intense Vermintide 2 experience, choosing a powerful character class will make surviving these high-difficulty runs much easier.

All character classes in Vermintide 2 can successfully complete the hardest difficulties. This guide focuses on the classes we recommend for players who are new to the game or still learning the ropes, as they offer a good chance of survival.

Vermintide 2 Playstyles, Explained

Vermintide 2 offers a variety of ways to play, and each character class is built around specific roles. Different subclasses within the same character are best suited for different tasks, so understanding how each one plays is key to being successful.

Vermintide 2 Playstyles
Style Role Classes
Frontline Horde management and defense Foot Knight Kruber War Priest Saltzpyre Handmaiden Kerillian Ironbreaker Bardin Unchained/Necromancer Sienna
Elite Killer Hunts down elites and special enemies Huntsman Kruber Witch Hunter Captain Saltzpyre Waystalker Kerillian Ranger Bardin Pyromancer Sienna
Boss Slayer Kill bosses as quickly as possible Grail Knight Kruber Bounty Hunter Saltzpyre Shade Kerillian Slayer Bardin Battle Wizard/Pyromancer Sienna
Anti-Horde Horde management but with a stronger emphasis on AoE attacks Mercenary Kruber Zealot Saltzpyre Sister of Thorns Kerillian Engineer Bardin Battle Wizard/Necromancer Sienna

Every character and their different specializations are adaptable, but they’ll always excel at their main purpose. It’s important to choose a weapon that fits how you like to play with that specialization – for example, a scythe works well with the Necromancer Sienna if you prefer taking out many enemies at once. Your weapon choice is just as crucial as your character class when it comes to contributing to your team.

Best Kruber Classes

Grail Knight is a particularly strong class for Kruber, mainly because it excels at fighting bosses. Its special ability, Blessed Blade, is a powerful single hit that can inflict huge damage, and with enough damage boosts, you can even defeat bosses in one strike. The downside is that Grail Knight Kruber can’t use ranged weapons, which can make dealing with special enemies like Ratling Gunners and Globadiers challenging.

While Kruber starts as a Mercenary, he’s surprisingly powerful and can often carry his team through tough fights. His special ability, Morale Boost, is great for controlling groups of enemies and briefly gives everyone on the team extra health. Mercenary Kruber is durable and deals good damage, making him a well-rounded choice for players who want a character that can do a bit of everything.

Best Kerillian Classes

The Waystalker is often considered the strongest Elite Killer in the game, largely due to their Trueshot Volley ability. This skill launches arrows that automatically target enemies, making elite hunts much simpler. Beyond this convenient, self-aiming ability, Waystalkers also have access to powerful weapons like the Glaive, which excels at both wide-area attacks and piercing through enemy armor.

If you want a character that can really withstand damage, the Handmaiden subclass is a fantastic option. It excels at avoiding and blocking attacks, and with skillful play, you can stay alive for a long time. The Handmaiden also has abilities that boost your critical hit rate, giving you more options when choosing equipment.

Best Bardin Classes

Outcast Engineer is one of the best classes in Vermintide 2 for two reasons:

  • It has a minigun with infinite ammo
  • It gives you a free bomb every 80 seconds

Playing this Bardin class is simple and really enjoyable, even on the hardest settings. You can quickly eliminate large groups of enemies like rats and Northlanders using free bombs that won’t harm your allies, and take down tougher foes with your powerful Crankgun.

If you enjoy playing Bardin but are new to higher difficulty levels like Legend or Cataclysm, the Ironbreaker subclass is a great choice. Similar to the Handmaiden, it focuses on staying alive – the Ironbreaker can take a lot of damage, making it a strong tank that can also effectively defeat bosses. Even so, it’s still important to practice dodging to avoid developing poor habits, as enemies on these harder difficulties still deal massive damage.

Best Saltzpyre Classes

If you’re looking for a character build that can quickly defeat both single enemies and large groups while gaining a lot of temporary health, the Zealot is an excellent choice. This subclass for Victor Saltzpyre takes advantage of his fast weapon speed and boosts it even further with the Holy Fervour ability. Because you’ll be attacking so rapidly, the Second Wind perk becomes incredibly useful, giving you temporary health every time you stagger an enemy – and you’ll be staggering them constantly.

The Zealot class can be powerful, but it’s a bit of a gamble. Many of its best abilities only become available when your health is low, making it a high-risk, high-reward option.

If you’re looking for a more well-rounded option, the Witch Hunter Captain is a great choice. This subclass can boost your whole team’s damage, and it has an ability that lets you instantly defeat most regular-sized enemies with a critical hit to the head. This works on most specials and elites, except for larger enemies like Maulers and Chaos Warriors, and is particularly effective against Berserkers such as Plague Monks and Savages.

Best Sienna Classes

The Necromancer is a strong choice for Sienna in both Legend and Cataclysm difficulties, largely due to its ability to summon skeletons. While these skeletons aren’t incredibly durable or powerful, they effectively draw enemy attention, providing valuable support for you and your team, and making it one of the best ways to control large groups of enemies.

Besides being able to quickly eliminate regular enemies, Necromancer Sienna excels at taking down tougher opponents like specials, elites, and bosses. This is thanks to her enhanced damage-over-time abilities and naturally higher critical hit rate. Her Reaping perk, which gives her an endless Cleave attack, is particularly effective against large groups of enemies.

Battle Wizard is a great choice for players who prefer a well-rounded playstyle. By reducing your ability cooldowns, you can use Fire Walk to create distance from enemies, giving you time to regroup and defeat them more effectively. We suggest using a Bolt Staff to quickly eliminate special enemies, elites, and bosses, but a Fireball Staff is a solid pick if you want to prioritize area-of-effect damage.
