Heroes come in all types. Some are natural fighters, while others are drawn into conflict unwillingly. Regardless of their background, many heroes are fiercely determined and won’t avoid a battle. This might be because they’re exceptionally skilled and want to destroy evil, or simply because they enjoy the challenge of combat.
No matter what kind of story you prefer, these characters are inspiring heroes who are easy to root for. They aren’t flawless – even the best heroes have weaknesses – but that’s part of what makes them so compelling. These are the characters players should look up to, regardless of the game or genre.
There will be spoilers.
Maelle (Clair Obscur: Expedition 33)
For Those Who Come After

Maelle is a member of the crew aboard *Clair Obscur: Expedition 33*. Throughout the journey, she faces terrifying monsters and the heartbreaking loss of her fellow crewmates. Adding to her struggles, she discovers she’s the daughter of The Paintress, the woman responsible for the chaos engulfing the world. While the situation is complex, Maelle remains committed to fixing things for her family and her country, no matter the cost.
Zidane Tribal (Final Fantasy 9)
A Thief With A Plan

Zidane is the main character in *Final Fantasy 9*, and he’s a charming thief known for his quick wit. He always has a clever remark, and while he’s usually playful, he knows when to be serious. Zidane isn’t your typical hero, but he steps up when he’s needed to save the world. Even after discovering his brother, Kuja, is the source of all the trouble, he fights alongside his friends. In a touching finale, Zidane manages one last appearance before his love, Garnet, proving that nothing could keep them separated, even after a seemingly fatal event.
Zagreus (Hades)
Hell Or High Water

In the game *Hades*, you play as Zagreus, the prince of the Underworld and the only character you can control – a typical feature of roguelike games. Zagreus is the son of Hades himself, and while he lives in the Underworld, he’s determined to escape and find his mother, despite his father forbidding it.
I’m totally hooked on Zagreus’ story! He’s just determined to escape the Underworld, even though his dad is against it and it keeps, well, *killing* him. Seriously, he dies over and over! And even after finally finding his mom and then, tragically, *still* dying because he can’t breathe the surface air, the guy just keeps going. It’s amazing – he never gives up!
Pit (Kid Icarus: Uprising)
Flying High

Pit is the main character in the *Kid Icarus* games. While his earlier appearances on the NES and Game Boy didn’t fully showcase his personality, *Kid Icarus: Uprising* successfully rebooted the series and gave Pit a much-needed upgrade. He’s a determined and optimistic hero who constantly talks about doing what’s right and never giving up. While his sincerity can be a little corny, Pit’s actions ultimately make him a character you can’t help but support.
Sora (Kingdom Hearts)
The Power Of Friendship

Sora from *Kingdom Hearts* and Pit would likely be great friends, as they share many similarities. Sora, despite being young, faces incredibly difficult challenges – he watches his friend Kairi get taken, sees his best friend Riku fall to darkness, and even temporarily loses his own identity. That’s just the beginning of his story! Through it all, Sora’s heart remains remarkably strong, acting as a source of hope and guidance for others, even in the darkest times.
Ichiban Kasuga (Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth)
A Kind-Hearted Bruiser

Ichiban became the main character in *Yakuza: Like a Dragon*, the seventh major game in the series. He stood out because of his genuine desire to do what was right for his friends and fellow members of the Yakuza.
I was blown away by how determined Ichiban is in *Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth*! The game starts with him waking up in Honolulu, totally lost and far from home. It turns out his mom, who he hasn’t seen in years, is in trouble, and he’s absolutely relentless in trying to find her, battling his way through everything to finally get to her. It’s a really emotional story!
Peter Parker (Marvel’s Spider-Man)
The Hero We Need

Peter Parker, better known as Spider-Man, has been a comic book staple since the 1960s. However, fresh interpretations of the character are always welcome, such as Insomniac Games’ *Marvel’s Spider-Man*, which offered a new take on the hero. Like other versions, this Peter is a compassionate person who cares deeply for his loved ones, including his aunt and friends, and even dedicates time to helping the less fortunate. He’s a superhero who always prioritizes saving lives over taking them, consistently offering his enemies a chance at redemption. This commitment leads to a particularly poignant conflict with Doc Ock, a mentor figure who quickly became a villain.
Mega Man Trigger/Volnutt (Mega Man Legends)
Determined But Nice

The main character of *Mega Man Legends* is officially known as either Mega Man Trigger or Mega Man Volnutt, but players simply refer to him as Mega Man. This 3D adventure game significantly developed the character, who had previously been fairly undefined in earlier *Mega Man* games on the NES and SNES. In *Mega Man Legends*, he becomes a kind-hearted adventurer with a humble personality, even if he’s not always sure what to say. While he might not be eloquent, Mega Man always knows the difference between good and evil and never gives up, whether he’s facing pirates threatening the island or battling robots in dungeons.
