Video games have existed for over 40 years, and many popular games have become long-running series, evolving across different consoles and telling many stories. However, not all of these series last forever, and sometimes they simply stop being made.
There are many reasons why a beloved series might end – perhaps it wasn’t selling well, the company decided to focus on something new, or the story simply reached a natural ending. Regardless, numerous franchises have finished their run and now exist only as fond recollections of the past.
8. Dark Souls
Truly The End Of An Era
Very few video game series have truly created their own genre, but the *Souls* series is one of them – it’s the foundation for all “soulslike” games. This trilogy is widely considered to be among the best gaming experiences available, offering beautifully designed worlds alongside a consistently challenging level of gameplay.
The third game and its expansions concluded a long story arc. Though the games weren’t directly connected, the final installment included enough nods to previous titles and fan-favorite elements to satisfy players and allow them to look forward to FromSoftware’s future projects.
7. No More Heroes
Satirical Battles That Are Never Coming Back
Okay, so after playing through all the crazy stuff in the *No More Heroes* series for over ten years, it’s finally done with *No More Heroes III*. Seriously, this series, made by Suda51, is unlike anything else I’ve played. It’s got this totally weird, funny vibe, but the fights are ridiculously over-the-top and intense – a really unique mix that always kept me hooked. It’s been a wild ride, but it’s come to an end.
Travis Touchdown’s story, from a nerdy fan to a famous assassin, was a unique mix of humor and genuine emotion. Now that Suda51 has confirmed this is the final chapter, *No More Heroes* ends not with a sense of being drawn out, but with the feeling of a story that concluded at the perfect time.
6. inFAMOUS
Superpowers From A Different Generation
Man, I used to be *huge* into the inFAMOUS games. They were one of the main reasons I had a PlayStation! I loved running around as a superhero and actually having my choices matter in the story. It all started with Cole MacGrath back in 2009, and then Second Son came along with that awesome Seattle setting. What really set it apart was how smoothly you could move around and just unleash crazy powers in combat. It was a really unique take on the superhero genre, and I always thought it stood out from the rest.
Now that Sucker Punch Productions is focusing on its other game series, the studio has stated it won’t be making any more inFAMOUS games. Though the original games were known for letting players make impactful choices and are still remembered fondly, many fans feel disappointed that the series is over, as there were clearly more stories to tell within that world.
5. Uncharted
All Good Stories Have To Come To An End
Naughty Dog’s *Uncharted* series truly shaped how video games tell stories in movies. With multiple games, side stories, and even a film adaptation, *Uncharted* became known for its exciting, worldwide adventures, thrilling action sequences, and the charismatic treasure hunter, Nathan Drake.
Man, playing through Drake’s Fortune and then A Thief’s End was just incredible. It felt like a modern Indiana Jones, but with gameplay that was super tight and polished. It really became one of PlayStation’s best series, hands down. Naughty Dog has said they’re done with Nathan Drake’s story for now – no new games planned with him as the main character. They did make The Lost Legacy, which was cool, but it feels like the main Uncharted adventure is officially over. It’s a bit sad, but what a run!
4. The Evil Within
Haunting Players No Longer
Created by the famous Shinji Mikami, the mind behind Resident Evil, The Evil Within brought back classic, intense survival horror. The two games in the series trapped players in disturbing and surreal worlds filled with terrifying creatures, limited supplies, and a constant sense of psychological fear.
The Evil Within 2 built upon the original with larger, more open levels and a story that felt deeply personal, establishing the series as a beloved and influential horror game. However, due to problems within the development studio and changes in ownership of the game’s rights, there are currently no plans for future installments. Unless something unexpected happens, it appears The Evil Within series has ended.
3. Portal
Forever A Gaming Icon
As a huge fan, I still think about *Portal* all the time! It completely changed how I looked at puzzle games with that amazing portal gun. The game was so clever and funny, and GLaDOS? Iconic! Then *Portal 2* came along and just blew everything up – a bigger story, the chance to play with a friend, and even more mind-bending puzzles. It really cemented the series as a classic, and honestly, you can still see its influence in games today.
Even though many people love it, Valve hasn’t announced or started work on a third Portal game. The studio is busy with other projects, and Portal hasn’t had new official content in over ten years. While there have been small hints and nods to the game, any new experiences come from dedicated fans creating their own content.
2. Baldur’s Gate
Redefining The RPG Genre
Baldur’s Gate was a groundbreaking computer RPG, famous for its complex gameplay and compelling story based on the world of Dungeons & Dragons. The original games from BioWare became incredibly influential, demonstrating how player choices could drive a narrative. More recently, Larian Studios brought the series back to life with Baldur’s Gate 3, a hugely popular game celebrated for its vastness, player freedom, and emotionally resonant story.
Larian Studios has stated that they won’t be making any expansions or sequels to Baldur’s Gate 3. This means the game is both a fantastic return to form for the series and its definitive conclusion, letting the story end on a high note and secure its place as a classic RPG.
1. Dead Space
The Master Of Sci-fi Horror
Dead Space popularized sci-fi survival horror, captivating players with its tight, scary spaceship settings, horrifying enemies called Necromorphs, and a unique combat system that focused on strategically cutting off enemy limbs. The three main games in the series are considered some of the most effective horror experiences ever made, and they’ve inspired many other survival horror titles since.
While the 2023 remake successfully brought the horror franchise back to audiences, it seems those days are over. Despite reigniting interest, the series won’t be continuing, likely due to disappointing sales or a decision to focus on other projects. It will remain a memorable part of horror history, but won’t be getting any new installments.
