Video Leak Reveals Sony is Working on AI-Powered PlayStation Characters

It’s been revealed through a recent leak that Sony is developing AI-controlled characters for certain PlayStation series.

The previously private leak, now made public, displays Horizon Forbidden West’s character Aloy engaging in a conversation where she answers questions posed to her. You can view the video recording below:

Just as anticipated, an AI-generated character doesn’t come close to the quality you’d get with a dedicated development team. Yet, despite this, Sony appears to have generated excitement for it, possibly during a private meeting, which later leaked to the public.

According to Sharwin Raghoebardajal, director of software engineering at Sony Interactive Entertainment, the video showcases a work-in-progress project being developed in collaboration with Guerrilla Games.

Despite not yet reaching the level of conventional development techniques, Sony’s foray into AI is drawing significant attention within the industry, particularly among developers. According to The Verge, nearly half (49%) of the 3,000 participants in a 2024 Game Developers Conference survey reported using generative AI tools in their work environment.

In recent times, Activision has been under fire due to their heavy reliance on artificial intelligence visuals in their promotional materials, which many viewers found lacking in quality and originality. The gaming community has expressed dissatisfaction over what appears to be a lack of dedication or creativity.
