This list will contain spoilers up to the Wano arc
Summary
- Crocodile’s sand ability is neutralized by liquid, a simple weakness that the crew exploited to defeat him.
- Hody Jones relies on energy steroids for power, making him vulnerable once those supplements are taken away.
- Spandam, despite being a marine, lacks fighting skills and can easily be defeated due to his weak combat abilities.
Throughout their journey in “One Piece,” Luffy and his companions have encountered numerous formidable adversaries, some of whom proved particularly challenging to defeat. However, not all antagonists hide their vulnerabilities as clear physical weaknesses; instead, these weaknesses often stem from the villain’s character traits or the specific limitations tied to their Devil Fruits.
Often, even when a villain’s vulnerability is glaringly apparent, Luffy sometimes takes some time to recognize it due to his lack of sharpness. Nevertheless, he and his team were successful in utilizing these weaknesses to defeat their marine and pirate foes permanently, as shown by the characters below who are notable examples of One Piece villains with hard-to-overlook vulnerabilities.
8. Crocodile
The Warlord’s Sand Won’t Work As Intended If Someone Covers It In Liquid
- First Appearance: Episode 76
In my observation during the Alabasta arc, the Straw Hat crew found themselves grappling with Crocodile’s Logia abilities, which they were yet to fully understand. This lack of comprehension made it challenging for them to counter the Warlord’s sand powers effectively. Despite Luffy frequently falling victim to Crocodile’s manipulations, it was later discovered that the secret to his defeat was more straightforward than anyone initially perceived. A touch of water and a sprinkle of blood were all that was required to neutralize his Devil Fruit powers.
The liquid could harden Crocodile’s sand abilities, making it challenging for him to evade his combatants, especially if they can identify his primary vulnerability. In the bizarre and eccentric realm of One Piece, where Devil Fruits function in unusual ways, many of them possess inherent weaknesses that become apparent when considering their logical aspects.
7. Hody Jones
Hody’s Energy Steroids Were The Source Of His Overwhelming Power
- First Appearance: Episode 529
At Fishman Island, Hody Jones might seem like a powerful Fishman due to his extraordinary abilities, but the underlying truth is quite disturbing. His intention for gaining such immense strength was not for noble purposes; rather, it was to eliminate as many humans as he could. To achieve this terrifying level of power, Hody Jones resorts to Energy Steroid supplements, which serve to beef up his physique and enhance his powers, making him incredibly resilient in combat situations so that he doesn’t have to fear defeat.
Although Hody was already quite formidable as a fighter, eliminating those supplements wouldn’t diminish his threat level any more than an ordinary Fishman. Even though Luffy and the team couldn’t manage this before Hody started his radical transformations, looking back, it seems like a straightforward approach to keep him from causing too much trouble.
6. Spandam
Spandam Is A High-Ranking Marine With Barely Any Fighting Skills To Speak Of
- First Appearance: Episode 249
Fans may recall Spandam as the crooked marine who inadvertently summoned a Buster Call during the Enies Lobby storyline. Assigned to capture the famous Nico Robin, Spandam isn’t the most dependable Marine officer one could find. In truth, he’s quite fearful and, while he always keeps a few blades on his person, he’s evidently not a strong combatant.
In their battle against CP-0, Luffi, Sanji, and Zoro were so focused on fighting they didn’t have time to pursue Spandam. Yet, it seems plausible that the Straw Hat captain could have defeated him with just one punch due to Spandam’s lack of combat skills. It’s surprising he even joined the Marines given his poor performance and inability to do his job effectively.
5. Big Mom
Without Any Food To Snack On, Big Mom Will Lose Control
- First Appearance: Episode 571
One thing that immediately becomes evident about Big Mom upon her introduction on Fishman Island is her profound affection for food. Being a person who thrives on organizing lavish dinner soirees and festive events, Big Mom has an insatiable craving for sweets and candies to sustain her throughout the day. If she doesn’t have access to these treats, she transforms into an enraged demon, losing all rationality, as demonstrated in Whole Cake Island. This loss of self-control can lead to Big Mom indiscriminately destroying both enemies and allies alike.
As long as someone manages to evade capture by Big Mom before she catches them, they could potentially make her betray her own family if they successfully pilfer her cherished treats. Another notable vulnerability, linked to her name, is the Mothering Mode – a state where Big Mom appears as an innocent mother whenever she encounters a child, although this has only been observed once during the Wano arc with Tama.
4. Bellamy
Bellamy Always Lets His Arrogance Get The Best Of Him
- First Appearance: Episode 146
Bellamy is a character who often speaks ill of others, which isn’t necessarily becoming of him. Although he’s not exactly timid, his arrogance tends to lead to his own demise. During the Jaya arc, for instance, he took pleasure in ridiculing Luffy, only to be felled by a single punch in front of his entire crew.
In Dressrosa, upon joining forces with Doflamingo, he attempted to maintain an air of superiority once more. However, fate had other plans as Doflamingo ultimately deceived him and discarded him, treating him as worthless. If Bellamy had shown a bit more humility and respect towards his fellow travelers, it’s reasonable to assume he could have forged a successful pirate career, instead of being compelled to retire due to repeated embarrassments.
3. Smoker
Smoker’s Heavy Reliance On His Fruit Ability Can Be More Of A Detriment Than An Advantage
- First Appearance: Episode 48
In the world of “One Piece,” there are numerous characters who wield Logia Devil Fruits, but Smoker stands out as a Marine heavily dependent on his smoke during intense battles. Typically, he employs his ability to swiftly maneuver through his surroundings like a flash after transforming into a cloud of smoke. In the initial story arcs, Luffy was puzzled by this skill, but it didn’t take long for him to discern that Smoker has one significant weakness.
According to Rayleigh, Armament Haki allows one to inflict harm on users of Logia Devil Fruit abilities, making it effective against characters like Smoker, even in their transformed states. This skill is a double-edged sword because while it provides Smoker with powerful offensive capabilities, his excessive reliance on it can sometimes work against him.
2. Blackbeard
An Absurdly Powerful Pirate Who Tends To Get A Little Too Overconfident
- First Appearance: Episode 146
Having control over two of the strongest Devil Fruits in the series gives Blackbeard a strong sense of self-assurance about his abilities. However, this confidence sometimes leads him to act recklessly, disregarding his own safety. For instance, during Impel Down with Luffy and Marineford with Whitebeard, he would approach without hesitation, only to show fear when they began to overpower him.
As an onlooker, I’ve noticed that Blackbeard, despite his colossal power, often appears overly confident – a trait that’s not lost on his adversaries. It’s essential to remember he’s human too, and this exuberance can sometimes lead him into precarious situations.
Moreover, carrying two Devil Fruits grants Blackbeard immense abilities but also makes him susceptible to greater damage than the average person. Although this vulnerability isn’t immediately apparent, it means that his overconfidence could potentially escalate into an even more significant challenge for him to handle.
1. Buggy
The Mighty Yonko Turns Out To Be A Big Coward
- First Appearance: Episode 4
As an ardent fan, I must admit that Buggy the Clown’s pirate act is nothing short of legendary, striking fear into the hearts of many. However, beneath that intimidating exterior, I strongly suspect he’s hiding a secret cowardice that rivals none in the entire series! You see, one swift attack is often enough to send him squealing in terror and scampering away like a startled rodent.
What’s more intriguing is his special Devil Fruit ability – he can be severed without a single scratch! This unique trait should make him feel invincible in battle, but ironically, it’s this very power that makes him quiver at the mere thought of facing anyone even remotely formidable.
On multiple occasions, this glaring vulnerability has been exploited, not just by Luffy, but by numerous other characters as well. Most recently, Crocodile and Mihawk have manipulated Buggy’s cowardly disposition within their organization, the Cross Guild, despite his attempts to maintain a facade of leadership. It’s rather peculiar that Buggy has risen to the rank of Yonko given his reputation as a constant tearaway, but it’s a testament to the extraordinary luck he seems to always have on his side.
