As a seasoned adventurer who has spent countless hours exploring the mystical realms of Mana, I can confidently say that the newest addition to the series, Visions of Mana, has both its charm and challenges. One such challenge lies in understanding the intricate elemental weaknesses and resistances system that governs combat.
In the course of gameplay, Visions of Mana players will find themselves frequently engaging in combat against various creatures. While mindless button-mashing may suffice in easy and beginner modes, as difficulties increase and enemies grow more hostile and damaging, adopting a strategic approach becomes crucial.
In the game Visions of Mana, the elemental weakness and resistance system isn’t clearly explained, making it challenging for players to determine an enemy’s vulnerabilities or resistances. The game only provides a quick tutorial at the start, leaving most of this information undisclosed.
Visions of Mana Elements Explained
In the game “Visions of Mana,” similar to its predecessors in the Mana series, combat effectiveness is determined by a straightforward element system. Each adversary naturally possesses an elemental attribute, which may fall under one of several categories.
- Fire
- Water
- Earth
- Wind
- Wood
- Moon
- Light
- Darkness
Weakness
Among the eight components of Visions of Mana, six of them exist as pairs that are vulnerable to one another. On the contrary, Wood and Moon are unique and do not possess any inherent weaknesses. Here’s a list of these paired elements:
- Fire <-> Water
- Earth <-> Wind
- Light <-> Darkness
Wood and Moon are not weak to each other.
In this game, the interaction between these pairs is quite straightforward. To illustrate using Fire and Water as an example, if an adversary is fire-based and you launch a water-type attack, it becomes highly effective. On the flip side, if your opponent is water-based and gets attacked by a fire-type move, again, the attack will be highly effective. So, when you cast Fireball against a fish, it should deal extra damage. If you use any other types like Earth, Wind, Light, Darkness, Wood, or Moon against the same creature, the impact of your attack will be normal.
Resistance
In simpler terms, when a character encounters an attack matching their own element, they either partially deflect it (resist) or are completely unaffected by it (immune). For instance, a fire-based creature would resist fire damage, while a water-based monster would withstand water attacks.
Immunity
Immunity is often decided on a case-by-case basis. There is no set formula for which enemy type is immune to which element. However, common sense still prevails. A blob of water will likely be immune to water, and attacking a wind elemental with a tornado likely won’t yield any results.
How to Check Enemy Elemental Weaknesses
During my gaming adventures, I’ve discovered three key methods to identify any enemy’s elemental vulnerabilities that could potentially help me in my journey.
Health Bar Indicator
In the game “Visions of Mana”, every monster you meet will have a health meter displayed above its image. At times, a symbol may appear in the left corner of this health meter, next to the level. This symbol indicates whether the enemy is vulnerable, resistant, or immune to the type of damage your current character can inflict. There are three different symbols that might show up.
Green Tick | Enemy is weak to the type of damage your currently controlled character deals. |
Orange Triange | Enemy is resistant to the type of damage your currently controlled character deals. |
Red Cross | Enemy is immune to the type of damage your currently controlled character deals. |
As a fan, I want to highlight that your character’s weapon isn’t just about elemental damage; it also inflicts two types: slash and strike. Interestingly, some foes may exhibit varying levels of resistance or immunity towards the physical side of your weapon. This aspect won’t be explicitly shown next to their health bar. In other words, if an enemy is resistant to slash damage, you might not see it decreasing when you’re using a slashing weapon. Instead, you’ll need to rely on other hints to determine whether that’s the case.
Damage Numbers
Each time players assault an opponent, a figure appears to display the amount of harm inflicted. The color of this damage figure signifies whether the enemy was vulnerable, resistant, or impervious to the type of damage they received at that moment. Golden indicates it was very effective, blue suggests resistance, grey implies immunity, and white means standard.
Bestiary
Once a player successfully battles an opponent, information about the enemy gets logged in their Bestiary (a reference guide). In this resource, players can access comprehensive details on the specific weaknesses and resistances of that type of enemy. This information is crucial for strategizing effective party compositions, especially during challenging encounters.
