Visiting the San Diego Zoo to Find Some Pikmin

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for both Pikmin and wildlife, I must say that the collaboration between Nintendo and the San Diego Zoo has been nothing short of delightful! Being invited to witness this partnership was like being granted a golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, but instead of chocolate, it was Pikmin!

From now until November 28th, the San Diego Zoo, known worldwide for showcasing remarkable animals, is teaming up with Nintendo for an unusual collaboration. Visitors will discover that Pikmin characters have taken over the Wilderness Explorers Basecamp, turning it into a mini-scavenger hunt zone within the kid-friendly section of the zoo.

This past weekend, Nintendo and the San Diego Zoo generously extended an invitation for me to check out their new Pikmin collaboration. Although there are already numerous reasons to pay a visit to the zoo, such as the recent comeback of the beloved Giant Panda exhibit, this partnership with Pikmin provides a delightful activity for younger guests as they traverse the Basecamp area.

The Wilderness Explorers Basecamp is a relatively new addition to the San Diego Zoo, a replacement for what was commonly referred to as the Kids Zoo or the Petting Zoo. Now, guests of any age can see some cute animals like Fennec Foxes or be creeped out in the Spineless Marvels area. However, the real highlight of the Basecamp, in my opinion, is the climbing and exploration areas. While you’ll do plenty of walking around the San Diego Zoo, sometimes kids just want to mimic the animals they see and climb around their environment. The Wilderness Explorers Basecamp offers just that.

Now, as an extra touch with the Pikmin connection, visitors will encounter a minor deviation in their journey as they attempt to locate hidden Pikmin throughout five distinct zones surrounding the Wilderness Explorers Basecamp. While I won’t disclose the precise locations of all the Pikmin, there is a handy map available that highlights the approximate areas where these adorable creatures might be hiding.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that while the Pikmin are vibrant and easy to notice against the backdrop of amber rock structures and lush greenery, they are quite tiny. Finding them all might require a bit of patience (keep in mind there are more than five groups, scattered across just five locations), but it makes for an enjoyable family quest.

The Pikmin Partnership serves as an enjoyable surprise, promoting children’s interest in exploring the San Diego Zoo!

In simpler terms, my son enjoyed identifying and recalling the unique skills of each Pikmin character in Pikmin 4. Interestingly, he was eager to discover more Pikmin once we’d found all five groups, but I realized it might disturb wildlife or distract non-Nintendo enthusiasts if we kept searching.

Collaborating with Nintendo might seem unusual for the San Diego Zoo, but it turned out to be quite delightful. It aligns perfectly with the concept of observing wild creatures; it’s voluntary, and we hope it inspires more children to explore the San Diego Zoo, which is an amazing destination in itself. Furthermore, if you have a child under 11, they can enter for free during October as an extra perk!

The Pikmin partnership continues at the San Diego Zoo till November 28th. We’re grateful to Nintendo and the Zoo for inviting us over.
