Honestly, if you asked anyone playing ARC Raiders if they’d protect Scrappy the rooster, I think most of us would instantly say yes! He’s become such a core part of how we play – he gathers materials for us while we’re out fighting ARC. But we didn’t really know Scrappy, you know? Like, who is this guy? Why is he just handing out free stuff? Where does he even get it? Some of that’s still a secret, but the developers at Embark finally gave us some backstory on Scrappy, explaining how he ended up being a part of what’s quickly become one of my favorite multiplayer games this year.
If you haven’t played ARC Raiders yet, you might not know about Scrappy, a surprisingly helpful rooster! When you venture out to collect resources, fight other players, and battle the ARC, Scrappy automatically gathers materials for you. He collects things like metal, fabric, and chemicals that you can use to craft important gear. Even if a raid isn’t successful, Scrappy will still provide some materials, but you’ll get a bigger haul if you return to Speranza safely.
Scrappy Was Nearly a Robot Cat
It’s understandable that adding a rooster named Scrappy to the game ARC Raiders seemed a little strange at first. Fans wondered why Embark chose that particular animal as a source of resources, and now the story behind it has been revealed. According to Embark 3D artist Johan, the idea came from a real-life Zoom meeting interruption. A flock of chickens wandered into his house during a call, completely stealing the show. Among them was a particularly friendly rooster named Håkan, who ultimately became the character known as Scrappy.
Johan explains that Håkan, unlike the other roosters, was a friendly, cuddly bird who was blind in one eye. Initially, a developer decided to scan Håkan and include him as a fun, hidden surprise within the game. He first appeared running around the cantina, but eventually got a bigger role. When the game Embark needed a visual for a resource producer in ARC Raiders, the team struggled with ideas like cats, robots, and even robot-cats. Then someone realized they already had a scanned rooster in the game! As Johan puts it, that simple idea became incredibly popular. What started as a small easter egg ultimately turned Håkan into one of the most cherished characters in the ARC Raiders world.
If you’ve been playing ARC Raiders for a while, you might not need Scrappy’s help anymore. But for newer players, he’s a great resource! He collects essential materials like metal, chemicals, and plastic, which are used to craft important gear and items. For example, metal can be made into mechanical parts for weapons, and fabric is key for making healing items like bandages. When you’re first starting out and going to the surface, be sure to check with Scrappy to collect the resources he offers.
Upgrading Scrappy is a key part of ARC Raiders, and it requires collecting some of the game’s hardest-to-find items. You’ll start by needing a Dog Collar, then Lemons and Apricots. After that, you’ll need Prickly Pears, Olives, and a Cat Bed, followed by Mushrooms, more Apricots, and Very Comfortable Pillows for his final upgrade. Each upgrade increases the resources Scrappy provides, making it important to level him up quickly.
