As a seasoned Warcraft veteran with over two decades of orcish conquest under my belt, I can say with unyielding certainty that “The Borderlands” mission from the Orc campaign in Warcraft 1 is a testament to the strategy genre’s timeless appeal. This level, while seemingly straightforward, demands strategic thinking, resource management, and a keen eye for scouting – all traits any self-respecting orc commander should possess.
In the initial mission for the Orc campaign within both the original “Warcraft: Orcs & Humans” and its remastered version, our objective was to safeguard a modest Outpost from encroaching human forces while simultaneously learning to construct fundamental structures. The subsequent mission, named “The Borderlands”, in the original “Warcraft 1”, required players to balance managing their settlement and confronting an unknown number of humans concealed within the Fog of War.
In Warcraft 1, even though Orc Scenario 2 in the Orc campaign is one of the initial missions, it demands players to have a fundamental grasp of army management, effective scouting, and economic and production skills. Fortunately, you don’t need to actively hunt Humans; instead, each Human settlement will attack your base over time, providing players who find it challenging to defend their Peons and structures with a defensive strategy to follow.
Warcraft 1 Orc Campaign – Scenario 2 Walkthrough
“The Borderlands”
Like the stinging of a wasp, the attacks from the humans grow more and more bothersome.
You have been assigned to a small outpost on the Borderlands of the Swamp of Sorrows.
Your task is to safeguard our territories against these relentless canines, by overpowering any resistance you may face.
In the second WC1 Orc campaign scenario, your goal is straightforward: Eliminate every single opponent! In this stage, you need to vanquish every human on the map to emerge victorious. These humans are strategically scattered across various locations.
At intervals, certain humans might approach your Settlement. However, if you’d like to expedite the situation, feel free to venture out and track them down instead.
As a passionate player, I’d advise you not to rush into eliminating these “voracious canines” right away. Instead, instruct your subjects to commence building our prosperous economy first. Straight after receiving the mission briefing, make sure to create an additional laborer and dispatch the one you already have towards the mine located to the north of town. Later on, when this mine exhausts its Gold reserves, you’ll need to switch to another one, but for now, there’s no immediate need for concern about that.
Your second Worker ought to swiftly construct a Farm utilizing your initial resources, followed by dispatching them for Wood-gathering. Once you’ve accrued sufficient Gold for a third Worker, construct and dispatch that one to the Mine as well.
Dispatch your two warriors and archers to explore the nearby surroundings, clearing the mist and enabling you to detect whether any humans are approaching prematurely. After you have surveyed an area approximately equal to a screen’s size around your settlement, position them strategically throughout the village so they can swiftly react if a human character launches an attack.
After gathering sufficient resources, place your Barracks on the southern part of the town. Simultaneously, prioritize building a Lumber Mill at the earliest opportunity. This action will enable you to purchase and enhance Spearmen units.
To ensure your units have enough resources, it might be beneficial to construct a third Farm before investing in new combat units (unless you’re replacing your initial ones). First, instruct one of your Orc Peons to build this new Farm. Afterward, prioritize building Spearmen and enhance them at the Lumber Mill twice, which will cost a total of 2250 Gold.
If your initial Gold Mine depletes before you’re prepared to establish your army, gather your fighting troops and explore towards the southeast. You’ll likely discover another Gold Mine nearby on your journey. Assign your workers to this mine to collect more Gold, and maintain a force of combat units along the path back to your settlement to protect them from enemy Humans.
As a gamer, I’d definitely suggest beefing up my workforce by adding a few more Peons to this Mine. Having three to four of them working here will guarantee a steady stream of Gold, allowing me to construct and enhance my combat units at a rapid pace.
In the early stages of setting up your resources and manufacturing, you’ll frequently encounter Human invasions. Be vigilant and check your border on the mini-map regularly for any red dots. These red dots signify that a Human unit is approaching from that specific direction.
On this map, you’ll find a total of 20 distinct Human groups, most of which consist of Archers and Knights. These Human forces that attack your settlement are included in the overall count. Consequently, it’s completely feasible to adopt a defensive strategy, allowing all Humans to advance towards you.
- If you decide to go this route, build a handful of Grunts and Spearmen and post them around the borders of your settlement. Humans will only approach in groups of one or two, so if you have three Spearmen on each side you will eventually be victorious.
- If you want to beat this scenario quickly, build up an army of about 10 or 11 Spearmen, upgrade them to their highest damage level, and send out 8 of them to scout the rest of the map in search of man flesh. The remaining two or three should stand guard at your Settlement and your Mine.
Following your victory over all human opponents in Borderlands, you’ll proceed to the second scenario of the Warcraft 1 Remastered Orc Campaign. In your upcoming assignment, you will find yourself on the outskirts of Grand Hamlet, a thriving human town. Your mission here is to instill lessons of humility and demonstrate the ferocity of the Orcs.
