As a long-time Warcraft enthusiast who grew up playing with miniatures and strategy games like Warhammer, I can’t help but be thrilled by the direction that Warcraft Rumble is taking. The focus on physical miniatures not only harks back to the origins of the franchise but also enhances the visual appeal on smaller screens, making it a perfect fit for mobile gaming.
At the heart of Warcraft Rumble lies the concept of Minis, which were instrumental in bringing this title into existence due to their physical form. The design of Warcraft Rumble’s miniature units, drawing inspiration from tabletop games, played a crucial role not only during development but also in maintaining its enduring charm.
In the 30th anniversary direct for Warcraft, a segment was dedicated to the game Warcraft Rumble, which brought several announcements. Starting December 10, the game will be available in beta as a PC port, along with changes in monetization strategies and the introduction of Split Leaders. The developers at Blizzard also showcased physical miniatures that were based on the minis from Rumble. Game Rant had an exclusive interview with executive producer Vik Saraf and art director Jeremy Collins to delve deeper into the background of these minis and their impact on the game.
Warcraft Rumble Devs Speak On The Importance Of Minis To The Game’s Art And Development
How Minis Make Warcraft Rumble’s Art Style Work
Although Warcraft Rumble is being drawn nearer to World of Warcraft due to the latter’s impending PC release, both Saraf and Collins emphasized that Rumble would maintain its unique artistic autonomy. One reason for Rumble’s miniature, toy-like visual style is for enhanced clarity on smaller mobile screens, a point Collins elaborated upon extensively.
As a gamer, it’s crucial for me to have the ability to quickly identify any unit on the battlefield at a glance. Whether I’m looking at a towering orc or a nimble footman, I should be able to tell them apart effortlessly. The orcs typically stand out with their green and red color scheme, while the footmen are easily spotted by their silver and blue attire.
When creating the art styles for our game, we always consider the platform we’ll be presenting it on. If we were to lean more towards the “WoW” art style for “Rumble,” it might not work as well on mobile devices due to their smaller screens and the high level of detail in the “WoW” style.
Saraf agreed, pointing out that when viewing a mobile screen, which is noticeably smaller, colors should stand out more and have a bit of contrast. He also highlighted the significance of Rumble’s miniatures to the game’s development, stating that these small figures were integral to its “initial concept.” Collins elaborated on this, explaining that for him, Warcraft is a hand-made world. Since every character in World of Warcraft has hand-painted textures, an actual artist has worked on each one, adding those intricate details for the players.
In these developer statements, it’s evident that the idea of ‘minis’ is crucial to the game ‘Warcraft Rumble’. The game’s characters make an extra effort to follow this tactile approach. This design choice not only makes units more noticeable on a smaller screen but also aligns with the lore of ‘Warcraft’ and the game’s creation process.
Warcraft Rumble’s Devs Have A Lot To Say About Physical Minis
As a devoted admirer of Warcraft Rumble, I find myself captivated by its gameplay, particularly its emphasis on miniature figures. This aspect seems to resonate strongly with enthusiasts of tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) like Dungeons & Dragons or wargame aficionados such as Warhammer players. Both Saraf and Collins have expressed their thoughts extensively on this topic, and Saraf even shared a fascinating anecdote involving miniatures at Blizzard. However, he made it clear that there are currently no plans for the creation of a physical miniatures game.
One team member decided to create a miniature Horde versus Alliance chessboard using the 3D blueprints and printed several miniatures on their own initiative!
It seems many of us share a great deal of curiosity about this topic, however, as of now, there hasn’t been any formal plan announced.
Collins pointed out that they were thrilled about Blizzard sharing STL files for Warcraft Rumble minis. He also highlighted the fact that the developers of Rumble are involved in various wargaming activities, such as Warhammer 40K and creative miniature painting, underscoring their enthusiasm for this field.
