Warframe Dev Comments on the Possibility of Releasing a Switch 2 Version

Fans eagerly anticipating a native version of Warframe on Nintendo Switch 2 will need to be patient a bit longer. Although Digital Extremes, the developers behind Warframe, have expressed interest in transitioning the free-to-play sci-fi shooter to the Switch 2, they haven’t begun work on the port just yet – not due to a lack of effort.

Since its debut in 2013, “Warframe” has been one of the longest-lasting multiplatform games available today, with Digital Extremes consistently releasing substantial content updates for it. The game’s success is not only due to these updates but also its wide availability on various platforms such as PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and soon Android (expected in fall 2025). However, the future of “Warframe” on Nintendo’s latest console is still uncertain.

Even though Nintendo launched the Switch 2 more than a month ago, Digital Extremes has yet to receive a development kit from them. Similar to other game studios, Digital Extremes is unable to start creating a version of Warframe that leverages the enhanced hardware of the Switch 2 due to this lack of resources. During a pre-TennoCon 2025 press Q&A, as reported by Eurogamer, Digital Extremes’ CEO Steve Sinclair expressed his team’s eagerness to delve into the potential capabilities of the Switch 2.

Warframe Switch 2 Version Will Launch Only After Nintendo Provides Dev Kits to Digital Extremes

Digital Extremes has definite intentions for a Switch 2 edition of Warframe, according to their confirmation, but they are currently in a holding pattern because Nintendo isn’t making developer kits easily accessible yet. As Sinclair humorously pointed out, even one dev kit would be sufficient for them to commence work on the Warframe Switch 2 version. He further elaborated that the native Switch 2 Warframe would offer advantages like quicker loading times and better performance due to high-speed cores – benefits that can’t be achieved without a developer kit.

As an ardent supporter, I can’t help but share the excitement our programmers are bursting with! We have indeed been brainstorming some exciting plans. Once we lay our hands on the [Switch 2] development kit, you can bet your last energy orb that we’ll be crafting a custom build for Warframe.

Currently, gamers can continue to play the Switch version of Warframe on the new Switch 2 through backward compatibility. However, some users have experienced occasional startup glitches with the Switch 2, a problem that developer Digital Extremes is actively working to resolve. These performance issues underscore the importance of creating a specialized build of Warframe for the Switch 2 to meet the high expectations of players on Nintendo’s latest system. It’s also important to mention that Digital Extremes isn’t alone in this situation, as other studios like Ant Workshop and Fellow Traveller Games are also encountering difficulties in obtaining Switch 2 development kits.
