Warframe Developer Digital Extremes Takes Anti-AI Stance

Digital Extremes, the company behind the popular game Warframe, has promised not to use AI-generated content in their games. While Warframe has been their biggest hit since 2013 and has a large, dedicated fanbase, they’re also working on other projects, including a new action game called Soulframe, which is currently in development.

While Warframe is still Digital Extremes’ main sci-fi game, their new game Soulframe will explore a different style – a more relaxed, medieval fantasy world – but will still feel familiar to Warframe players. Warframe recently celebrated its 13th anniversary on March 13, 2026, and quickly followed that up with a launch on the new Switch 2 console on March 25. Now, Warframe is available on many different devices, including phones and tablets, as well as traditional PCs and consoles.

Digital Extremes Promises to Never Use Gen AI for Content Production in Warframe and Soulframe

Digital Extremes has firmly stated they will never use AI-generated content in their games. This commitment came after Community Director Megan Everett shared a story about being tricked on a livestream – someone submitted AI-created artwork resembling a Warframe and a Gundam crossover, and she initially praised it before viewers pointed out its true origin. She described feeling “devastated” by the deception. Given Warframe’s unique art style makes it easy for AI to create convincing fakes, Digital Extremes is emphasizing that all art for both Warframe and their upcoming game, Soulframe, is created entirely by human artists. They want to be clear: they are “a very non-AI company.”

While Warframe has a dedicated fanbase that will likely remain loyal, the same can’t be guaranteed for Soulframe. Digital Extremes is making a clear statement about their values by emphasizing a development process that doesn’t use artificial intelligence. This is especially noteworthy because other game studios seem to be quietly using AI, as seen with the AI-generated artwork in Crimson Desert.

Warframe is a long-running online game, and its developers have built a strong relationship with its players. Recently, they’ve announced they won’t be using AI to create new content, which is likely to be a popular decision with the community. Unlike many similar games, Warframe continues to receive major updates and improvements even after 13 years, keeping the experience fresh and engaging.

While AI tools could potentially save money in game development, both players and developers are expressing concerns about their use. It’s unclear how widely these tools will be adopted in the future, but many believe there will always be demand for games made entirely by humans, without any AI assistance. Digital Extremes, according to recent comments, intends to focus on this human-created approach.
