Warframe Devs Detail New Mission Types with The Old Peace

Over the past 12 years, Warframe has steadily grown into a popular free-to-play action RPG. While it initially faced comparisons to Destiny, the game built a strong and loyal following through positive word-of-mouth. Consistent updates and new content from Digital Extremes have been key to Warframe’s continued success and growing popularity.

December brings a significant new update to Warframe called The Old Peace. Before its release, we had the chance to talk with Rebecca Ford (Creative Director), Adrian Bott (Lead Writer), Erich Preston (Audio Lead), and Kat Kingsley (Principal Writer) about what players can expect, including the two new mission types: The Perita Rebellion and The Descendia.

How The Old Peace Embraces Trench Warframe

On December 10th, Warframe players will continue the game’s story with a new Cinematic Quest. This quest lets players explore forgotten memories from a past war. Along with the ongoing main storyline—which already unlocks new areas, resources, and other content—this new chapter, called The Old Peace, will add important details to the game’s overall history.

Two new missions, The Descendia and The Perita Rebellion, are being added to Warframe. According to Ford, these missions delve into the theme of war within the game and are inspired by the early work of Warframe’s first art director, Michael “Mynki” Brennan, particularly his concept for a “Devil” Warframe. The team found the idea of a devilish presence on the battlefield compelling, and used the phrase “War is Hell” as a guiding principle while developing the story for The Old Peace.

Introducing The Perita Rebellion and The Descendia

The Perita Rebellion offers players a firsthand look at the war’s most pivotal moments, but with a unique challenge. Due to the strain of reliving these memories through the operator’s heightened senses, players will only have 12 minutes to experience these flashbacks, as Ford explains.

We’re aiming for an immersive, cinematic experience reminiscent of a World War I action film, and this scene is crucial to the story of The Old Peace Quest. The goals in this update are designed to be realistic and strategic, focusing on military tactics rather than typical video game objectives. To fully embrace the WWI setting, we’re also adding a new bayonet weapon.

Alongside The Perita Rebellion, a new game mode called The Descendia challenges players to descend a tower where each level gets progressively harder. Digital Extremes explains that this tower symbolizes the difficult memories of Roathe, experienced through the Drifter’s perspective – a more personal journey compared to the external conflict of The Perita Rebellion. Ford believes these new modes will bring a renewed sense of excitement for both newcomers and long-time players, and promises valuable rewards, including powerful abilities like the Tauron Strike and prestigious Honoria player titles.

Connecting The Devil’s Triad to The Descendia

Beyond rewards and overcoming obstacles, The Descendia offers something new. The Devil’s Triad is Digital Extremes’ chance to try a different storytelling approach, building on popular story elements from Warframe: 1999. It’s not a typical mission or quest, but a complete side story told through an improved K.I.M. System. Furthermore, Warframe is developing its system for romance and relationships within The Devil’s Triad, and the team hopes players will form a strong emotional bond with characters like Wisp, Harrow, and Uriel as they progress.

We’re adding three unique characters to deepen the romance and relationship aspects of Warframe. These characters are unlike anything players have encountered before in the game, and we hope they’ll create a strong emotional connection, not just within the new Descendia game mode, but also to the wider Warframe universe and its hidden secrets.

Like most games that are constantly updated, player feedback is incredibly important to us as we create new content and plan future updates – whether that’s adding features like kissing in The Devil’s Triad or expanding the story with the Perita Rebellion. We actually used player feedback while developing the first Orokin Protoframe for The Devil’s Triad storyline.

After 12 years of updates and improvements, the developers of Warframe show no signs of slowing down, and are excited about what’s next for the game. They’re starting a new era of story-driven content planned for 2026, and the first major step, The Old Peace update, arrives on all platforms December 10th.
