Warframe: The Old Peace Signals a New Era with Primes and Ultimate Abilities

Okay, so Warframe: The Old Peace is almost here, and honestly, it looks like the biggest update they’ve ever done! It’s diving deep into the backstory of the game’s origins, and they’re actually reworking some of the oldest systems like Primes and Focus – which is pretty huge. There’s a ton of new stuff coming, so it’s a lot to take in. But the cool thing is, everything in The Old Peace isn’t just for now; it’s all building towards something even bigger – a whole new system called Tau that’s coming down the line. It feels like everything’s connected, and I’m really excited to see where it all goes!

Warframe: The Old Peace Releases December 10

Unearthing the Truth Behind The Old Peace

The next update will offer the best clues yet about Tau, the star system where the major conflict in Warframe‘s story, known as The Old War, took place. This war was fought between the powerful Orokin empire and the Sentients, robots originally created to prepare Tau for colonization. Players, as the Operator, experienced this war directly, but the memories were so traumatic they were deliberately removed. Recovering these memories is central to understanding The Old Peace.

Warframe’s story is diving into its past with a new focus on a time known as The Old War. According to lead writer Adrian Bott, the railway system connecting star systems wasn’t always about conflict – it briefly saw an era of peace. Players, as the Operator, will uncover what caused that peace to end. This story will unfold through two major in-game activities: The Perita Rebellion and an expansion to the Focus School system, which players have been eagerly awaiting.

Perita Rebellion Gameplay and the Tauron Focus School

Two key parts of The Old Peace gameplay are the Perita Rebellion and ‘Focus 2.0’. Players will experience the World War 1-inspired Perita Rebellion through 12-minute cycles using a new system called Albrecht’s Dark Refractory. Each cycle involves completing objectives leading to a final challenge. During these cycles, players can collect Tektolyst Artifacts, which are needed to unlock Tauron Strikes (powerful new abilities) at the Tauron Focus School in Warframe.

In The Old Peace expansion, players will discover the Tauron Focus School orbiting Perita. This rediscovery unlocks new upgrade paths within the existing Focus skill trees. These paths lead to powerful, unique abilities called Tauron Strikes, which will significantly enhance the Operator and Drifter’s capabilities, ultimately preparing them for the challenges Tau will face.

The Arrival of Tauron Strikes, Warframe’s Ultimate Abilities

While players have only witnessed one ability so far, each of the trees within the updated Focus system boasts a distinct ultimate ability. Rebecca Ford, Creative Director for Warframe, explains that these powerful abilities draw inspiration from the epic battles seen in Shonen anime such as Dragon Ball Z and Jujutsu Kaisen.

Imagine weapons with incredible power: a sword so fast it leaves trails of energy, a hammer that creates shockwaves, unbelievably quick punches, a staff unleashing a massive magical explosion, an arrow that turns into a rain of attacks, or a dangerous book overflowing with energy and firing a huge beam.

The studio aimed to create this specific atmosphere, and the gameplay trailer for The Old Peace clearly demonstrates their success. More importantly, these new ultimate abilities provided a chance to revisit the Focus system, which hasn’t been significantly updated in almost ten years. According to Ford, the ultimates and the Tauron Academy will help Digital Extremes make Warframe‘s Focus trees feel more dynamic, useful, and satisfying during combat.

The Future of Warframe’s Primes

The ‘Old Peace’ update represents a shift in how Digital Extremes will approach Prime Warframes – the upgraded versions of the game’s characters – in terms of both story and gameplay. Along with the release of Gyre Prime and her accompanying weapons, Rebecca Ford noted that because this update delves into the mysterious background of Warframe, they wanted to make the Prime Warframes extra special.

For the first time in years, players will be able to use the Excalibur Prime Warframe during a special mission. This classic frame was previously considered a rare and unplayable piece of Warframe history. The new Caliban Prime also appears in the game’s story as part of the environment, suggesting that Prime Warframes might have a bigger role in future quests. This willingness to try new things also includes the introduction of the Prime Vanguard.

Primes and the Vanguard Threat

The Old Peace is getting a new enemy type called the Prime Vanguard. These enemies take control of powerful, classic Warframes (known as Primes) and fight as part of a new, aggressive faction—a breakaway group from the ancient Orokin Empire. To connect these Primes to the current story, they’ll also appear in the next Prime Resurgence event. This is a clever way to keep older Warframes useful and encourage players to check out their collections before the next big update, which will take us to Tau next year.

Digital Extremes has confirmed that the Excalibur Prime Warframe will not be included in the Prime Resurgence event. This is to maintain its special status as a reward for early Warframe players, known as Founders.

Warframe: The Old Peace Has Even More on Offer

Despite all the new content – too much to list completely – Digital Extremes sees The Old Peace as the start of a new chapter for Warframe, expanding beyond the current areas and heading towards Tau, not as an ending. Rebecca Ford explained that the team is focused on trying new things with everything, even established elements like Prime Warframes. They believe there are no limits to what they can create.
