Warner Bros Looking To Sell Of Games Division, Report Claims

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia reading about Warner Bros potentially parting ways with their games division. Over the years, they’ve brought us some of the most iconic gaming experiences, from the gritty streets of Midway to the magical world of Hogwarts.

It seems that Warner Bros. Discovery may be considering exiting the gaming industry, as suggested by a recent report from Financial Times (requires subscription). The report indicates that they are exploring the option of selling a significant portion of their game division.

The report was released a fortnight ago, following the acquisition of MultiVersus’s creator, Player First Games, by Warner Bros. Games.

As an ardent follower of the company’s news, I’ve learned that there’s a suggestion floating around about offloading some of our beloved games to steer clear of potential legal battles with numerous debt holders. Yet, it’s crucial to note that this is just a proposal and no definite decisions have been made on the matter.

Currently, Warner Bros. Games holds popular intellectual properties such as Harry Potter and Mortal Kombat. They are also responsible for publishing Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, a live-service game that received unfavorable feedback from both players and critics. This game, which cost the company approximately $200 million in revenue, did not meet expectations.

On previous occasions, Warner Bros. Games has been considered as a possible target for sale. In fact, during the year 2020, news broke out that Microsoft was contemplating purchasing this division, with the aim of acquiring popular games such as Mortal Kombat, Suicide Squad, and more, under their ownership.

It’s uncertain whether Microsoft will show interest in another sale given their current circumstances following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

Warner Bros. Discovery has not responded to multiple requests for comment prior to publishing.
