Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema surprised fans by announcing a third *Mortal Kombat* movie before the second film even hits theaters. Jeremy Slater, who wrote the screenplay for *Mortal Kombat 2*, is also set to write the script for *Mortal Kombat 3*.
Mortal Kombat 2 is the follow-up to the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie, and will be the fourth film based on the popular Mortal Kombat video game series. The first film was a financial success, earning over $84 million with both ticket sales and streaming on HBO Max, despite a $55 million budget. The new movie will feature many well-known characters from the franchise, and actor Karl Urban will be joining the cast as Johnny Cage. Several actors from the 2021 film, including Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade and Josh Lawson as Kano, are also returning for the sequel.
Mortal Kombat 3 Movie Is Already In The Works
Despite the delay of *Mortal Kombat 2* – now scheduled for release on May 15, 2026, instead of October 24th – Warner Bros. and New Line remain optimistic about the franchise. At a New York Comic Con 2025 event, producer Slater announced that the studio is so confident *Mortal Kombat 2* will be a hit that they’ve already begun planning *Mortal Kombat 3*. Slater also revealed they want him to write the script for the third film. Currently, no other details about *Mortal Kombat 3* have been released by Slater or Warner Bros.
The announcement of *Mortal Kombat 3* arrived during a complicated time for the *Mortal Kombat* series. Dan Forden, the voice of the iconic “Toasty!” phrase and a longtime audio director for the games, left NetherRealm Studios on October 3rd. He had spent a combined 37 years with NetherRealm and its previous company, Midway Games. Forden’s departure seemed friendly, and he mentioned he planned to use his time to explore other personal passions.
The release of *Mortal Kombat 2* has been delayed past October, but fans won’t have to wait long for some classic *Mortal Kombat* content. The *Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection* – a digital bundle featuring games like *Mortal Kombat Anthologies: Sub-Zero* and *Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3* – will be available on all major platforms starting October 30th. If you prefer physical copies, they’ll begin shipping on December 12th.
