A former Konami employee recently told Time Extension that the Wachowskis, creators of The Matrix, approached Hideo Kojima about developing a Matrix video game. However, a Konami executive reportedly turned down the project. Since the original 1999 film, there haven’t been many Matrix games, and none have achieved the same success.
As a gamer, I always thought The Matrix would make an amazing game. Honestly, the few games they have made based on it just haven’t felt right. But apparently, back in 1999, there was a chance things could have been totally different, and I’m super curious about what happened!
Hideo Kojima Almost Made a Matrix Video Game
Time Extension recently spoke with Christopher Bergstresser, who used to oversee licensing at Konami. He revealed that the filmmakers behind The Matrix, the Wachowskis, were admirers of game developer Hideo Kojima, and that the two actually met in 1999.
Hideo Kojima and the Wachowskis met with concept artists, including Bergstresser, along with Akihiro Saito, who at the time worked for Konami and later became Head of Communications for Kojima Productions. Kazumi Kitaue, a supervisor and executive producer who eventually became CEO of Konami, was also present. Bergstresser recalls the meeting concluding when the Wachowskis asked Kojima if he would develop a Matrix video game, to which Kitaue firmly responded, “No.”
Time Extension also spoke with another former Konami employee who remembers the meeting a bit differently. This source claims Kitaue’s initial rejection didn’t immediately end the discussion. Kojima apparently showed a lot of enthusiasm for working with the Wachowskis after Kitaue’s comment, and his team was reportedly very upset when that collaboration ultimately fell through.
As a huge fan, I remember waiting ages for a Matrix game! It finally happened in 2003 with Enter the Matrix, which tried to do a lot and tell its own story alongside The Matrix Reloaded, but honestly, it wasn’t perfect. Since then, only three more official Matrix games have come out: The Matrix: Path of Neo and The Matrix Online in 2005, and then The Matrix Awakens way later in 2021. It’s been a long wait between games!
