Discord has postponed its planned age verification system, originally scheduled to launch on March 1st. This decision comes after many users expressed concerns and criticism following the initial announcement. Discord says it’s still working on age verification but will be more open about its partnerships and process going forward.
Just days before Discord planned to start requiring age verification globally – similar to what’s already happening in places like the UK and Australia – they paused the rollout. The original plan would have automatically set all users as ‘teenagers,’ limiting access to mature content on servers and channels. To unlock full access, users would have needed to verify their age by submitting an ID or a facial scan through a third-party service. However, this sparked significant user backlash, with many canceling their Discord Nitro subscriptions and searching for other voice chat platforms.
Discord’s Age Verification Rollout Has Been Pushed Back
After facing criticism about its plans to verify users’ ages, Discord has announced it will delay the rollout until the second half of 2026. Co-founder and CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy admitted the company didn’t clearly explain how age verification would work and that the initial announcement caused concern. He clarified that the vast majority of Discord users – over 90% – won’t need to verify their age if they keep their current security settings. For those who do, Discord will continue to use its existing age estimation tools.

Similar to how games like Roblox verify ages, Discord will also publish reports detailing its age verification methods and the companies it partners with. They are also looking into other verification options, such as using credit cards, while prioritizing user privacy.

So, Discord’s been rethinking how we verify ages, and I’m glad! Basically, they’re only going to work with companies that can verify age on your device – meaning your info isn’t sent anywhere else. They’re also going to be totally transparent about who they’re working with, listing all their partners. They tried out a company called Persona for some testing in the UK, but decided it wasn’t the right fit. If Discord does need me to prove my age, they’ll give me a few different options, but all those companies will have to meet their privacy standards. Honestly, a lot of us were worried about age verification after that data breach with one of their old support companies back in 2025, and they get that. They said they’ve learned from that and aren’t working with that company anymore – which is a huge relief!
