‘We Were Making A Hell Of A Game’ Dark Outlaw Games Founder Speaks On The Studio’s Closure

The video game industry has faced significant challenges recently, with many studios closing down, games being canceled, and widespread layoffs affecting thousands of workers. These problems began gaining attention in the summer of 2023 and continue to impact both game developers and players. Recently, Sony closed Dark Outlaw Games, a studio they established in 2025. Jason Blundell, who previously led development on Call of Duty Zombies, expressed disappointment with the closure, stating that his team was creating a truly exceptional game.

Following the Covid-19 pandemic, video game popularity surged, with games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons selling exceptionally well and online multiplayer games such as Call of Duty and Fortnite attracting many new players. This led gaming companies to hire more staff to meet the increased demand. However, starting in 2023, the industry began to struggle. Companies like Microsoft, Embracer Group, Ubisoft, Amazon Gaming, and Sony started announcing layoffs and reorganizations to reduce costs. This resulted in game studios closing, projects being canceled, and employees losing their jobs – a trend that continues today, with Sony recently shutting down another development team.

Jason Blundell Mourns the Closure of Dark Outlaw Games and Its Canceled Project

During a live online discussion with developer JC Farmer, Jason Blundell, founder of Dark Outlaw Games, expressed his disappointment that the studio had been shut down and their current game project canceled. He emphasized that the game wasn’t canceled due to quality issues, but rather because of typical changes within the video game industry. While saddened by the closure, Blundell explained that companies often have to make tough decisions and discontinue projects that don’t align with their new goals. Ultimately, their confidential project was a casualty of recent cuts at Sony.

Despite the recent closure of Dark Outlaw Games, Jason Blundell remains hopeful. He said he’ll allow himself a moment to feel disappointed, but then quickly refocus and move forward. The studio’s closure reportedly resulted in around 50 job losses, and it’s currently unknown what Blundell and Farmer will do next. During a livestream, Blundell emphasized that adapting to change and listening to fans are key to his work as a game developer, and he wants to continue delivering great games. While it’s unclear what his next project will be, fans are optimistic that Blundell will eventually share another fantastic game with the world.

Sony isn’t alone in making big changes to its workforce in 2026. Ubisoft’s Red Storm studio recently had significant layoffs and canceled 10 games, and Epic Games has cut staff again, even forcing them to remove three game modes from Fortnite. It’s currently unknown if projects from Dark Outlaw Games will be moved to other teams, and it remains to be seen if these large-scale changes by Sony and other companies will ultimately be successful.
