As a fan who’s been following the supernatural genre for decades, I can confidently say that Wednesday has truly struck a chord with me and many others. The show’s perfect blend of humor, suspense, and dark undertones is reminiscent of the classic Addams Family we all love.

In a brilliant blend of dark wit, sharp sarcasm, and suspense, Netflix’s Wednesday resonated deeply with the cultural zeitgeist of the Addams Family universe. This series, one of the streamer’s greatest successes, owes much to Jenna Ortega’s exceptional portrayal of the title character. Wednesday Addams’ brooding, deadpan demeanor stands in stark contrast to a talented ensemble cast, including her bubbly Nevermore werewolf roommate, Enid Sinclair, and Principal Larissa Weems, a dedicated shapeshifter, among others.

In the captivating world of Wednesday’s story, I find myself drawn to a recurring theme often seen among young characters: they don’t always agree with the elders, and this is particularly evident with the show’s protagonist. The Sheriff of Jericho town, Donovan Galpin, and Wednesday seem to be on opposite sides, with their disagreements making it clear that he isn’t shy about being seen as her adversary.

Wednesday Gets Into The Nevermore Spirit

On a Wednesday, Gomez and Morticia Addams, her parents, decide to enroll her in their old school, Nevermore Academy, a place for misfits, oddities, and monstrous beings, as she has been expelled from an ordinary eighth school for excessive punishment. At the start of the story, Wednesday seeks revenge on Pugsley’s tormentors by releasing two bags full of piranhas into their swimming pool during practice hours. Feeling no remorse, Wednesday had also been kicked out of Nancy Reagan High School. However, she is later accepted mid-semester at Nevermore Academy.

Over the course of her initial attempts to escape during her first week, Wednesday comes to believe that Nevermore is exactly where she belongs. She discovers from the local sheriff that her father has been imprisoned for committing murder. A sinister prophecy reveals itself, predicting that Wednesday will bring destruction upon Nevermore. Determined to uncover the truth of this ominous forecast, she becomes embroiled in a series of horrific killings. Recently, Wednesday has been struggling with her unusual psychic abilities and finds solace among peers such as Eugene Ottinger, Ajax Petropolus, Xavier Thorpe, and Enid Sinclair, who share some understanding of her unique predicament, even if they do not fully comprehend it.

How Does Sheriff Donovan Galpin Figure Into Wednesday’s Story?

Wednesday Season 2 Must Redeem Sheriff Galpin

In a small town named Jericho, the sheriff, Donovan Galpin, is both the town’s law enforcer and the widowed father of barista Tyler (Hunter Doohan). His relationship with Tyler carries some imperfections. Tyler yearns to discuss aspects about his late mother, Francoise, but the Sheriff repeatedly postpones this essential conversation. One day, Wednesday encounters Tyler at his workplace, which happens to be the local Weathervane cafĂ©. Here, she intervenes and subdues three local bullies who work at Pilgrim World amusement park. Upon entering the shop, Sheriff Galpin learns from Weems that Wednesday is an Addams. He promptly accuses her of orchestrating the bullying incident that took place at the Weathervane coffee shop.

Guessing the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Sheriff Galpin maintains a wary gaze towards Nevermore and Wednesday, harboring a strong suspicion towards them. In no uncertain terms, he accuses them by directly pointing his finger at her.

I’m gonna keep my eye on you.

On Wednesday and Tyler, there’s a growing relationship that Sheriff Galpin disapproves of due to his prejudiced opinion towards the young scholar. However, what truly angers him is his intense dislike for Nevermore, especially Wednesday. What makes it worse is that he consistently dismisses Tyler, who yearns for a heart-to-heart about his deceased mother. Unfortunately, as an uninvolved parent, Galpin is the reason Tyler becomes vulnerable to Marilyn Thornhill (Laurel Gates). It was Galpin’s absence and neglect that allowed Laurel to transform Tyler into his Hyde form. He failed in his duty to monitor his child and offer him the emotional support their situation demanded. Marilyn exploited this vulnerability and gained Tyler’s trust due to Galpin postponing the difficult discussion about Francoise. Manipulating Tyler, she took advantage of the knowledge that his mother was a Hyde.

Sheriff Galpin’s Role In Wednesday Season 2

Wednesday Season 2 Must Redeem Sheriff Galpin

In Season 2 of Wednesday, it would be appropriate for Sheriff Galpin to express remorse due to his role in Tyler’s predicament as his only parent. Being aware of Tyler’s Hyde identity, he seemed to overlook the larger context and let his bias towards Nevermore and Wednesday influence his decision-making. It’s frustrating to watch Sheriff Galpin stubbornly refuse to link Tyler to the environment of Jericho, despite Wednesday’s persistent appeals.

In simpler terms, Sheriff Galpin’s character should start off by acknowledging his mistakes that led to Tyler’s transformation into the Hyde monster and his enslavement by Marilyn. He neglected his duties as a sheriff, often acting out of self-interest, but these flaws can serve as stepping stones for his redemption. To redeem himself, Sheriff Galpin could assist Wednesday in her Season 2 adventures and work on rebuilding his relationship with Tyler. His role as a parent was not just about providing for Tyler, but also being emotionally present. For Tyler to accept his paranormal condition, Sheriff Galpin needs to become a supportive and responsible parent. He should be honest about his late wife’s illness and the fact that he let Tyler pretend to be normal while he investigated the school of outcasts. Instead of focusing solely on the newcomer, he was biased towards the school and overlooked the truth that was right in front of him.
