As a die-hard fan of supernatural mysteries, I must say that Bianca Barclay has stolen the show for me in Wednesday! Initially, she seemed like just another mean girl stereotype, but her complexities and hidden depths have made her one of my favorite characters.
At first appearance on a Wednesday, Bianca Barclay appeared to embody the typical bully archetype, a dominant figure in Nevermore’s social hierarchy, often referred to as the “queen bee.” She was part of one of the largest cliques at school and previously dated one of Wednesday’s love interests from Season 1, Xavier.
Eventually, it became clear that there was more to Bianca than met the eye. She not only proved herself to be a skilled fencer and an intelligent student, but she was also a member of Nevermore’s secret society, The Nightshades. What makes her particularly intriguing is how she presents a tough exterior while concealing her own emotional struggles within.
Xavier ended things with Bianca due to his uncertainty whether he was genuinely attracted to her or if it was the influence of her enchanting voice, a fact Bianca admitted left him hurt. Bianca’s captivating voice, which allows her to manipulate others, is potent yet it leaves her questioning if people truly appreciate her. This predicament reached its peak in Season 1, Episode 5 titled “You Reap What You Woe”. Instead of visiting for Parents’ Weekend, Bianca’s mother, Gabrielle, appeared with a hidden agenda – to reel Bianca back into her so-called “wellness movement” or scam app called Morning Song. Gabrielle required Bianca’s voice as her own was losing strength. Initially, Bianca resisted until Gabrielle threatened to expose that she had used her voice to gain entry into Nevermore. In the final scene of the episode, Bianca agreed to rejoin Morning Song, but only after completing the school year.
Lucas Almost Got Ensnared in Season 1
While Gabrielle is waiting for Bianca to come back to Morning Song, she doesn’t just sit idle; instead, she continues plotting her schemes. In Season 1, Episode 6 “Quid Pro Woe”, it’s shown that Gabrielle introduced Lucas to Morning Song as a way to help him straighten up his act. Although he typically wouldn’t be interested in such an idea, he ended up trusting her, suggesting she used some of her dwindling siren song abilities on him. Despite the prank at the Rave’N that ruined her dress, Bianca quickly confronts Lucas when she sees him wearing one of Morning Song’s bracelets. She tells him to delete the app right away, implying they are only after his money, not his well-being. Lucas listens to Bianca and the two begin to cultivate a growing romance. This storyline demonstrates how someone, especially an outsider, might get drawn into Morning Song, symbolizing their connection with the app, and what the app is truly about – using siren songs to swindle customers out of their money.
Morning Song Is Not Just an App, It’s a Cult
Instead of simply going to Nevermore because it welcomes outcasts, Bianca deliberately enrolled there as a means to break free from Morning Song. She wanted to create a fresh start for herself and distance herself further from her mother and Morning Song by even changing her name from Brandy Jane to Bianca. Despite Gabrielle referring to Morning Song as a “community”, Bianca labels it as a “cult”. Although Gabrielle quickly corrects Bianca, calling Morning Song a “personal development movement aimed at helping individuals take charge of their lives,” this description seems similar to NXIVM. NXIVM was a cult that presented itself as a human potential development organization but was actually a cover for the criminal activities led by its leader, Keith Raniere. It would be intriguing if Wednesday explored a storyline involving such an organization, especially incorporating siren song abilities as a tool for control.
Who is Gideon?
In the world where NXIVM exists, it’s hard to imagine anything without Keith Raniere as a parallel. Gideon is presumed to be the leader of Morning Song, a cult that some find captivating but others, like Bianca, are deeply revolted by. The mere mention of Gideon’s name makes her shudder, and she feels disillusioned when she learns her mother married him. Despite Morning Song being an app that harnesses the allure of siren songs, it seems that Gideon himself isn’t a siren but rather manipulates these beings to achieve his goals, as Bianca describes it. This suggests that Gideon is a non-siren antagonist who leverages his charm to assert control over the more powerful mind-controlling sirens. With recruitment for Morning Song dwindling and the wrong people beginning to probe, Gideon may need Bianca to regain his influence. The unmasking of this questionable stepfather is expected to be a significant plot point in Season 2, especially if he has connections to the stalker or is portrayed by a well-known actor within the franchise.
Bianca Barclay stands out as one of Wednesday’s most captivating personalities. The upcoming season might explore Bianca’s history, her bond with her mother, the factors driving her, and, naturally, the mystery surrounding Morning Star. Introducing a cult could pave the way for compelling adversaries, such as cult leader Gideon, for Wednesday and her comrades to face off against. Truth be told, who can resist a thrilling cult narrative?
