As a seasoned gamer and a die-hard fan of anything dark, mysterious, and macabre, I can’t help but be captivated by the intriguing tale of Gomez and Morticia Addams from Netflix’s ‘Wednesday’. Despite their brief appearances in Season 1, Lucius Hoyos and Jenna Ortega breathed such life into these iconic characters that it left me yearning for more.

Although Lucius Hoyos and Gwen Jones delivered standout performances as Lucien “Young Gomez” and Wednesday “Young Morticia” Addams, their screen time in Netflix’s Wednesday is limited. Given that Season 1 of Wednesday is set in the present day, there aren’t many scenes with Young Gomez and Morticia. However, Hoyos and Jones left such an indelible impression that it could be fascinating to explore these characters further in Season 2.

In Episode 5 titled “You Reap What You Woe,” we encounter youthful iterations of Gomez and Morticia Addams in reminiscent scenes. These flashbacks depict the duo’s alleged involvement in the death of Garrett Gates. Meanwhile, Wednesday Addams delves into a mystery at Nevermore’s 1990 Rave’N Dance in the contemporary era. As events unfold, mature Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Gomez (Luis Guzmán) share their version of the past incidents. Scattered images of young Gomez and Morticia from old photographs within Nevermore stir discontent in Wednesday, who longs to free herself from her parents’ influence.

On Wednesday, we see numerous flashbacks revealing that Gomez and Morticia first crossed paths at Nevermore. In one such memory, we discover that it was actually Morticia who ended the life of Garrett Gates, a boy smitten with her. His infatuation escalated to the point where he attempted to harm Gomez out of jealousy, but in the heat of the moment, Garrett was accidentally killed by Morticia with nightshade. Originally, Sheriff Galpin suspected Gomez of intentionally murdering Garrett, but later findings proved that Garrett’s death was due to unintentional poisoning from the nightshade.

Wednesday Needs To Give Gwen Jones and Lucius Hoyos Another Chance To Shine

Wednesday Season 2 Should Revisit Young Gomez and Morticia

On Wednesdays television debut, Gwen Jones earned her first acting credit, whereas Hoyos had previously taken on various roles. He lent his voice to Carlos in PAW Patrol, played Parsley in Little Charmers, portrayed Jose Gutierrez on Heroes Reborn, and starred as McCalister in Netflix’s Between. Although Jones and Hoyos may not be the standout stars of Wednesday, they make a significant impact and could convincingly carry a potential prequel series, which has already garnered much attention from Wednesday’s dedicated fanbase.

Fans of Wednesday have been clamoring for a precursor series due to Jones and Hoyos’ outstanding performances in the show. While Wednesday merely hints at the early life of Young Gomez and Morticia, a prequel series could delve deeper into the mischief this couple would undoubtedly encounter. Moreover, such a series might provide a more detailed account of the Addams Family history, including how they became notorious, and how each member joined the family.

There’s Still Much To Be Discovered About Gomez and Morticia’s Past

Wednesday Season 2 Should Revisit Young Gomez and Morticia

In the chronology of the Addams Family, details about Gomez and Morticia’s past remain largely undisclosed. However, in the 1964 television series “The Addams Family”, Gomez is depicted as being of Spanish origin, ailing before meeting Morticia, and studying law. As an adult, he transforms into a fit billionaire with a flair for fencing. In contrast, the TV show portrays Morticia playing a Japanese shamisen or caring for her carnivorous plant, Cleopatra. Her lineage is traced back to the Salem witch trials era in Massachusetts, and she is often referred to as a “witch”. Furthermore, hints suggest that witchcraft may be inherent in her ancestry. Additionally, Gomez might exhibit supernatural abilities during Season 2, which aligns with Morticia’s magical upbringing.

There are several stories about how Gomez and Morticia began their romantic relationship. One account, presented in the episode “Green-Eyed Gomez” of The Addams Family, suggests that Gomez fell in love with Morticia when he spotted her riding a buffalo sidesaddle. Another storyline hinted at in the two-part tale “Morticia’s Romance” implies that Gomez was initially intended to marry Morticia’s sister, Ophelia Frump, but their connection sparked upon Morticia’s arrival. In the Addams Family films from the 1990s, it is told that they first crossed paths at a funeral, where Gomez endeared himself to Morticia by remarking on her beauty, which outshone even the deceased person lying before them.

Although Wednesday has penned a chapter in the love saga of Gomez and Morticia, numerous paths remain open for their narrative development. Given Tim Burton’s extensive expertise in gothic horror and complex romances (as demonstrated by Barnabas and Angelique from Dark Shadows and Edward Scissorhands and Kim Boggs in Edward Scissorhands), delving into the past of Gomez and Morticia could be effortless. Once Gomez was cleared of a crime he didn’t commit, the subsequent chapters in their story as young adults are yet to be written – leaving room for audience interpretation or a potential prequel series to elaborate on these missing years. If there are plans for an Uncle Fester spin-off, it’s plausible that a prequel series might also materialize.

Regardless of whether Wednesday delves deeper into Gomez and Morticia’s past in Season 2 or not, there remains an opportunity for further insight into the lives of this captivating couple. A possible spin-off series could potentially provide a comprehensive look at their unique and intriguing history.
