Wednesday Season 2: Will Tyler Finally Break Free From His Dark Past?

In the realm of captivating characters, Wednesday’s Tyler Galpin, once a barista now grappling with manipulability and confined in a psychiatric institution, is an intriguing choice for deep exploration through compelling narratives. He’s clever, witty, gifted – yet, regrettably, easily deceived. Marilyn Thornhill skillfully exploits his tumultuous family background, while Ty’s distant father exacerbates the situation. The sheriff’s reluctance to discuss Tyler’s mother stirs questions in him about whether his father truly loved her.

In the first season of Wednesday, Tyler works under the guidance of Laurel Gates (her real name). What makes him an intriguing character is the possibility of his redemption through skillful writing. The creators of Wednesday have decided to keep Tyler in the cast for Season 2, leading us to wonder: Will Tyler utilize his inner Hyde for good or ill?

How Marilyn Thornhill Became Tyler’s Hyde Master

As a cinephile, I found myself reflecting on Thornhill’s manipulation of Tyler’s troubled bond with his father, using him as a pawn for her sinister objectives. When Uncle Fester unveiled the fiend haunting Jericho and Nevermore as a Hyde, I couldn’t help but wonder, “Could this be a reference to Jekyll and Hyde?” Fester affirmed my suspicions, sharing his encounters with three such creatures during his stay at the Zurich Institute for the Criminally Insane during his vacation.

In the tale of Uncle Fester, it was Olga Malacova, a renowned concert pianist, who underwent an extraordinary change during a performance of Chopin’s sonata, leading to a tragic incident. This left Wednesday pondering: did Olga undergo this transformation spontaneously, or was some external factor involved in triggering her metamorphosis? Ultimately, Wednesday found herself secretly taking the book Uncle Fester had suggested – Nathaniel Faulkner’s diary – from the Nightshade Library. She discovered within its pages that a creature known as a Hyde monster remains dormant until awakened by a traumatic event, a chemical stimulus, or hypnosis.

Ty’s late mother, Francoise Galpin, was actually a Hyde, and her monstrous nature emerged due to postpartum depression following Ty’s birth. All through his life, Ty had disguised himself as an ordinary person, while his father lived in constant fear. Contrary to the sheriff’s misleading statement, Francoise wasn’t bipolar, but instead was confined at Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital, where Ty is currently detained, the same institution where he now resides.

According to Nathaniel Faulkner’s diary, it appears that Tyler was also born as a result of a genetic mutation. His alter-ego, Hyde, was activated by Thornhill/Laurel Gates using a chemical derived from plants. The absence of his father led Tyler to find comfort elsewhere, which resulted in him forming a bond with Gates. Wednesday’s observation holds truth: “He’s the child of a man who isn’t there for him.

You manipulated him by showing him what his mother truly was.

This information led Wednesday to search for not just the monster but also its master.

What’s Tyler and Wednesday’s Status?

Tyler’s behavior was driven by a complex blend of his intense fear, triggered by his mother’s death and his father’s indifference, which led him to be manipulated by Gates. After Wednesday kidnapped and interrogated him, she was apprehended by Sheriff Galpin, who had been alerted by Weems. Later, she was freed in a swap deal, but the crucial moment in her and Tyler’s relationship occurred when he whispered to her at the police station that he was truly a Hyde, hinting at the impending events.

On Wednesday, Principal Weems learned the truth from her and together they uncovered Gates’ deceitful plan. Tragically, Weems paid the ultimate price for their revelation. However, a pivotal moment in this story came when it was understood that Tyler, along with Weems and several other victims slain by Tyler under Gates’ instructions, were nothing more than pawns in a larger scheme orchestrated by Gates. Gates skillfully controlled Tyler through classic manipulation methods, employing his own misfortune to advance her objectives.

What they did to your mother […] The outcasts made her a monster.

On Wednesday alone was capable of discerning the intricacies within this grim tale. Firmly addressing Gates, who was yet to reveal his true identity as Thornhill, she cautioned him:

Unbeknownst to Tyler, the truth wouldn’t provide his liberation; instead, it would bind him to your control. Initially, this prospect was terrifying, which is why you resorted to the cave and restraints. However, over time, he came to serve you voluntarily.

Is Tyler’s Redemption Arc Due?

Wednesday Visits Tyler In The Trailer

On another occasion, Wednesday and Tyler cross paths inside Crackstone’s Crypt. However, before Tyler could tease her, Gates instructed him to stay near the boat. In response, Wednesday jibes at him, calling him a “well-behaved little Jekyll.” As he did this, Tyler subtly bumped into her with a dismissive shoulder check, continuing on his way past her.

On a later occasion, on a Wednesday, Wednesday and Tyler cross paths in the heart of a forest. Tyler advances toward her, branding her a resilient insect like a cockroach for repeatedly eluding death. Their dialogue is sharp and tense, filled with undercurrents of hostility. After being provoked by Wednesday’s words, Tyler transforms and assaults her. However, Enid intervenes swiftly and tackles him. On a night graced by the full moon, Enid, in her werewolf form, confronts Tyler’s monstrous alter ego, while Wednesday returns to school. Eventually, Enid emerges victorious over the monster, while Sheriff Galpin carries Tyler’s battered body away. This pivotal scene underscores Tyler’s hidden human qualities and a father’s tender feelings towards his son.

In the second season of “Wednesday,” character Tyler appears poised for correction and his narrative still has much to unfold. With his malevolent mentor now deceased, Tyler becomes receptive to change. Flexible and capable, there’s potential for a redemption storyline that may stem from self-discipline and emotional regulation.

Tyler might find purpose in using his inner darkness for the greater good, and Wednesday’s return to him at Willow Hill facility seems significant. In the season 2 teaser trailer, Wednesday encounters Tyler, chained to a wall. He gives her a threatening glare and growls menacingly, but she appears unaffected by his proximity.

In the world of Nevermore and Jericho, the shadows are falling once more upon this enigmatic duo, hinting at a myriad of interactions between them in the past. As we eagerly await the return of ‘Wednesday’ in its second season, I can’t help but wonder if the passionate dance of tension and drama – the tango – might not be in their future?
