As a long-time fan of Digital Extremes and Warframe, I was initially intrigued but also confused by the announcement of their new game, Soulframe. The title seemed familiar, yet different, and I couldn’t help but wonder if it would be another entry in the Soulslike genre that has captured the gaming community’s imagination in recent years.
Digital Extremes is currently developing a new free-to-play MMO named Soulframe, which has caused some confusion among gamers due to its similar-sounding name to the “Soulslike” or “Soulsborne” games from FromSoftware. However, unlike Dark Souls, Demon’s Souls, and Bloodborne, Soulframe does not belong to this genre as it features distinct gameplay and combat mechanics.
As a long-time fan of Warframe, I’m excited to share my perspective on the latest development in the universe created by Digital Extremes. Having spent countless hours honing my skills as a Tenno warrior, the announcement of Soulframe, a sister title to my beloved online shooter, left me exhilarated.
Soulframe’s Themes Helped Retain The Title Despite Connection To Soulslike
In an interview with GamesRadar, Geoff Crookes, Soulframe’s creative director, acknowledged the resemblance between their game title and FromSoft’s catalog. When asked about the reason behind using “soul” in the title, Crookes jokingly replied, “Because we’re fools.” However, they thoroughly considered their option before making the final decision, as the game’s themes influenced their choice to retain it.
As a passionate fan, I can share how the developers at Digital Extremes carefully selected the name “Soulframe” for their game, mindful not to infringe on FromSoft’s intellectual property. Crookes described the gameplay experience as follows: “I engage in the soul-mending process of restoring the world, unearth my ancestors by collecting their souls within the game, and build connections with other players, carrying remnants of their souls into my own world.”
An uninspired title went against the grain of the game’s essential characteristics.
The developers chose not to compete against creators of exceptional games. Instead, they aimed to enhance their own work and make a strong first impact on players by showcasing the game’s potential for positivity and the romantic elements it offers.
Instead of Warframe’s fast-paced, hyper-stylized mayhem, Soulframe offers a more leisurely experience without being lackadaisical. Contrary to its name suggesting otherwise, Soulframe doesn’t belong to the Soulslike genre. Instead, it blends the game’s connection to soul elements with Warframe to create a bond between the two titles. The developers intended Soulframe to serve as a balanced alternative to what Warframe represents.
Soulframe is scheduled to be released some time in 2024.
