The popular game “Plants vs. Zombies” expanded from dominating the casual games sector to becoming a comprehensive media empire. However, the franchise has been experiencing some setbacks for quite some time now. Rumors about a new “Plants vs. Zombies” title have been circulating, and with that, Electronic Arts (EA) and PopCap Games could benefit from studying lessons derived from its previous release.
Initially, PopCap was a small, independent game studio known for developing arcade-style games like Heavy Weapon, Peggle, Bejeweled, and others. However, when they released the tower defense game Plants vs. Zombies, its adorable graphics, humorous tone, and easy-to-understand yet strategically deep gameplay resonated greatly with players. After Electronic Arts (EA) acquired PopCap, Plants vs. Zombies received a follow-up title and several spinoff shooter games that quickly gained favor among fans.
Plants vs. Zombies 3 Didn’t Hit The Mark, So PopCap And EA Need To Change Focus
As a dedicated fan, I’ve noticed a downward trend in the Pea vs. Zombies series since 2019. The release of “Battle for Neighborville” didn’t manage to captivate us the way its predecessor, the cherished “Garden Warfare duology,” did. Don’t get me wrong, there were some fantastic ideas (like sprinting, rich single-player content, and a few balance adjustments), but it veered too far from the roots of the original series.
Following this, there was a gap in new releases, which allowed “PvZ 2” and “Garden Warfare 2” to gradually fade away due to power creep and lack of support respectively.
The launch of “Plants vs. Zombies 3,” designed to revive the series by returning to its original tower defense theme, hasn’t improved things. Despite multiple small-scale trials and a larger soft launch in 2024, “PvZ 3” has been removed from listings again; PopCap has found it difficult to convince fans to embrace a new game. Nevertheless, there’s still hope for the series to regain momentum if Electronic Arts (EA) and PopCap take note of the lessons learned from “PvZ 3.
Plants vs. Zombies Needs To Go Back To The Basics
Just as Battle for Neighborville veered too far from the essence of the Garden Warfare series, Plants vs. Zombies 3 fell short on capturing what fans adore about Plants vs. Zombies. The latest game attempt merged the tower defense mechanics with too many features typical of mobile games, emulating the strategies of games such as Merge Mansion. Regrettably, it omitted the option for players to pick which plants they took into battle—eliminating a crucial aspect of Plants vs. Zombies and Plants vs. Zombies 2. The enjoyment comes from amassing various plants, devising new strategies, and managing within a set number of slots.
In the end, selecting plants was reintroduced in PvZ 3, but it came too late and fell short. The upcoming PvZ game should return to the traditional formula of both PvZ and PvZ 2 while eliminating the excessive monetization and power creep found in the latter. A game that builds upon successful elements from the past would be an effective way to regain fan favor; the vibrant modding community surrounding PvZ 2, with notable modpacks like Reflourished and Eclise offering fans of the series exactly what they desire, could serve as a source of inspiration.
PopCap Needs To Simplify The Story
To achieve the same essence, let’s go back to the straightforward narrative style like in the classic game PvZ. The story was primarily conveyed through level design, with Crazy Dave offering only occasional comments and zombies sending humorous letters. The story unfolded as the zombie attacks evolved, appearing at various locations or times of day to intensify the challenge. For now, it would be wise to pause attempts to integrate the comics, a vast cast of characters, and global-scale perils.
