In Monster Hunter Stories 3, you still hunt monsters, but the game focuses more on raising and teaming up with them to fight alongside you. It’s a central part of how the game works.
Like any animal bred in care, Monsties raised this way will develop slightly differently. Fortunately, the world of Stories 3 allows for some genetic modification, and we’ve gathered some of the most impressive examples.
We’ve identified some top genes from each category that consistently perform well in various situations. There are many other great genes available, but we’ve focused on a select few from each category.
Free Bingo Gene (No Element)
Adding genes to your Monstie isn’t just about finding the best ones – where you place them matters a lot and can give you significant advantages.
These are called Bingos, and there’s a way to get a little extra help with them. ‘Free Bingo Genes’ can function as any gene needed to finish a line on your Bingo card, and you can use as many as you require. The trade-off is that you’ll have to give up one of your character’s skills, but the benefits from completing a Bingo can often make it worthwhile.
Any S Rank Gene
As you play, you might find Monsties that are born with a special, improved version of a Skill – an ‘S rank’ version that’s better than the normal one. These powerful Monsties don’t appear randomly; they only show up once the game’s ecosystem has reached a certain level, specifically an ‘S’ rank.
If you manage to get an S-rank gene on one of your Monsties, you can then pass that powerful gene on to any other Monstie. It takes a little more work, but S-rank genes are always better than the standard ones.
Elemental Attack And Defense (Any Element)
It’s cool how my Monsties get tougher just by leveling up – their defense stat goes up automatically! It’s different from my own character, who gets their defense from the armor I equip. Though, some Monsties are naturally a bit squishier than others, and you really have to watch out for their elemental weaknesses too. It adds a fun layer of strategy!
Elemental Attack and Defense genes are key for improving your Monstie’s overall defenses and reducing elemental weaknesses. They can also significantly boost the amount of elemental damage your Monstie deals.
Burning Fang (Fire)
Burning Fang is a powerful Fire-element gene, and it’s considered one of the very best for many different builds. An even stronger, S-rank version is also available, making it a top choice for players.
This attack is very efficient, costing just 30 Stamina while dealing a significant 90 damage. It can also burn opponents and almost always lands a critical hit. Although it only does 10 Wyvernfell damage, its other strengths more than compensate for that.
Foxflame Bubbles (Water)
Foxflame Bubbles is a powerful gene originating from the Soulseer Mizutsune. It functions as a more forceful and offensive counterpart to the standard Mizutsune’s protective ability.
Foxflame Bubbles is a low-cost attack, using only 15 Stamina, but it’s surprisingly powerful! It deals 70 Water damage and 20 Wyvernfell damage, and even has a chance to burn your opponent, making them even more vulnerable.
Snow Mantle (Ice)
Egg Skills are abilities your Monsties learn that depend on their habitat. They only show up on Monsties with two types who are raised in a habitat that matches one of their elements. For example, if you want a Snow Mantle with its special skill, you need to find its egg in an Ice habitat.
You’ll also get a random Ice Egg Skill, but once you learn it, you can teach it to any of your other Monsties. Snow Mantle is a really useful skill, boosting your Critical hit rate, Dodge, and Speed – all for just 40 Stamina.
E. Dominance (Dragon)
Dominance is a rare skill known as a Dragon Egg Skill, so you’ll probably find it on a Monstie that naturally lives in the Serathis area. Despite being hard to find, it’s a very powerful skill!
This Skill costs 30 Stamina to use and weakens all enemies by lowering their Attack and Defense. The more you use it, the more their stats decrease, making it particularly effective when fighting multiple enemies like Ibushi and Narwa.
Inudate (Water)
The Inudate gene appears early in monsters like the Royal Ludroth, and it remains a valuable skill throughout the game. While effective on its own, you can maximize its potential with the right equipment and preparation.

This ability costs 20 Stamina and deals 70 Water damage, plus 40 Wyvernfell damage. It also slows down enemies and makes them more vulnerable to Thunder attacks. Slowing enemies is already useful, but reducing their Thunder resistance is a fantastic bonus. This ability works especially well on a Monstie that uses both Water and Thunder attacks.
Thunder Smash (Thunder)
Thunder Smash is a strong Skill with a rare, even more powerful version. What makes it unique is that it gets better with each use, building in strength as you continue to use it.
This attack costs 40 Stamina and deals 100 Thunder damage, plus 40 Wyvernfell damage. It hits all enemies and lowers their Thunder Defense, making subsequent uses even more powerful.
Shredding Scales (Non-Elemental)
You might have noticed how powerful the Shredding Scales Skill is and been curious why. While it’s not as effective when you use it, you can obtain the gene from any Seregios monster, including the rare S rank version.
Shredding Scales doesn’t deal elemental damage, but it’s incredibly effective for its cost of 40 Stamina. It hits all enemies for 100 damage and applies 40 Wyvernfell, with a high chance to cause Bleeding and frequently landing as a critical hit. When used skillfully, it’s a very powerful ability.
