What Does Concord Shutting Down Mean For You?

As a gamer who’s been through the ups and downs of the gaming world, I have to say it’s a real bummer that Concord is going offline. It was an exciting game and I spent countless hours with friends shooting it out on the Northstar. But now, even if you still own a copy or it’s installed on your system, you can’t join a game anymore. Sony took down the store page on Steam, PlayStation Store, and listed it as “Announced” with a release date of 8/23/2024. They said they were listening to our feedback since the launch of Concord on PlayStation 5 and PC, but unfortunately, while many qualities of the experience resonated with players, other aspects didn’t land the way they intended. They decided to take the game offline starting September 6, 2024, and will offer a full refund for all gamers who have purchased the game for PS5 or PC. On the bright side, if Sony decides to bring Concord back online with a total revamp and a better roadmap, it’ll likely launch as a free-to-play game instead of a paid title. They wish to explore options to determine how best to move forward with the project, after all, it spent years in development.

If you haven’t yet heard, Sony made a shocking announcement – Concord, a popular arena shooter game, is closing down entirely. This isn’t just about halting further development or cancelling future content; they’re effectively ending it with a big bang. So, what does this mean for you as a player? What does it mean for those who have already purchased the game?

Can You Still Play Concord?

Unfortunately, they shut down the game servers completely when they decided to cancel it. If you own a copy and still have it installed, you can’t play it right now, and it’s currently unavailable for purchase. Sony has removed the game from Steam, and on the PlayStation Store, it’s just listed as “Announced” with a release date of August 23, 2024.

In its announcement, Sony said:

To our Concord players, we’ve been carefully taking in your insights since the release of Concord on PlayStation 5 and PC, and we want to express our gratitude to everyone who’s embarked on this adventure with us aboard the Northstar. Your backing and the vibrant community that has flourished around the game have truly made a difference for us.
To put it simply, while certain aspects of the game matched with players’ experiences, we also acknowledge that other parts of the game and our initial release didn’t hit the mark as planned. Consequently, we are choosing to take the game offline starting on September 6, 2024, and investigate alternative methods, such as those that will be more accessible for our players.
As we chart our course forward, Concord Sales on the PlayStation 5 and PC platforms will temporarily halt, and we plan to reimburse every gamer who bought the game in full for their initial purchase cost. If you obtained the game from the PlayStation Store or directly through PlayStation, your refund shall be returned to your original payment source.

It’s great news that those who purchased a ticket will be fully reimbursed, but it’s disappointing for those eager players who were genuinely looking forward to the game. Although it didn’t perform well in sales, Concord was enjoyable, even if it didn’t set a new standard. The studio was trying to follow a trend from years ago and moved too slowly to cash in on it.

Will Concord Return?

It’s quite plausible that Sony may choose to reactivate Concord, giving it a complete overhaul and a more promising plan. If they opt for this, it’s likely that the game will be released as a free-to-play version rather than one that requires payment. The statement in their announcement suggests that they are considering various strategies to guide the project effectively, considering the significant time spent on its development.

Based on expert opinions, Concord reportedly managed to sell around 25,000 units, suggesting that it didn’t meet expectations across the board. It’s intriguing to see what Sony’s next move will be in relation to this title.
