The recent ROOTS update to PEAK introduced a powerful new item called the Book of Bones. While it offers significant benefits, using it comes with risks. What Does the Book of Bones Do in PEAK?

How to Get the Book of Bones

The Book of Bones is a rare magical item you can find by opening either Ancient Luggage or Ancient Statues, but you can only get it from a Statue if everyone on your team is still alive. If you’re lucky enough to find it, it’s a one-time use item with two special abilities:

  • Revive players, but turns them into skeletons
  • Turns the reader into a skeleton if no players need reviving

If you find a player’s skeleton, you can use the Book of Bones to bring them back to life – but they’ll return as a skeleton! You can also use the book on yourself to become a skeleton, though this transformation has a strange side effect.

Transforming into a skeleton using the Book of Bones makes you immune to Hunger, Burn, Frost, Poison, Sleepiness, and Spores. However, you’ll take double damage from falling and explosions, so be careful! Your stamina and item weights remain unchanged. This can be a lifesaver in desperate situations, like avoiding starvation or bypassing lava in CALDERA. Just remember that the increased damage makes you very vulnerable – explosives like Dynamite can instantly kill you, though you can still heal with Medkits and Bandages.

How to Get the Applied Esoterica Badge in PEAK

To earn the Applied Esoterica Badge, you need to play with a friend. First, get the Book of Bones – it randomly drops from Ancient Luggage or Ancient Statues. Then, have your friend’s character die and become a skeleton. When they’re a skeleton, look at them while holding the Book of Bones. You’ll see a prompt asking if you want to revive them. Press the interact button (usually ‘E’ on keyboard) to use the Book of Bones and bring them back. Successfully reviving a player with the Book of Bones unlocks the Applied Esoterica Badge and gives you the Skeleton Top cosmetic.
