What Does the Ubisoft/Tencent Subsidiary Mean for Gamers?

On March 27th, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news as a gamer – Ubisoft is teaming up with Tencent to create a new company! This partnership will bring together our most iconic series: Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six. In exchange for a 25% stake worth €1.16 billion, Tencent will join us on this incredible journey. As Ubisoft’s CEO, Yves Guillemot, puts it, this is a “historic agreement” that promises an even more exhilarating future for gaming!

However, how will this newly established subsidiary impact Ubisoft’s “flagship trio” of video game series, and similarly, what implications might it have on their other games?

What Does the Ubisoft/Tencent Deal Mean for Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six?

Based on the language used in the announcement and a memo from Ubisoft CEO, Yves Guillemot, it’s clear that Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six are the main priorities for both Ubisoft and Tencent. In his memo, Yves refers to these three series as Ubisoft’s “most potent franchises.” The intention behind the Tencent investment is to strengthen these franchises, making them undisputed global symbols, according to Yves.

  • Assassin’s Creed just had a much needed successful launch with Shadows. The game has reached more than 3 million players in a week since launch, has been well received critically, and has the second highest day one sales in franchise history.
  • Rainbow Six Siege just celebrated its 10 year anniversary, and is “evolving” into R6 Siege X in the near future. The game has retained a large playerbase and a thriving esports scene since launch.
  • Far Cry is one of Ubisoft’s most recognized and successful series. Far Cry 6, the series’ most recent installment, released in 2021, and sold over 10 million copies during its first fiscal year.

Regarding where Tencent’s investment is specifically directed, there’s only scant information available. Yves hinted that the new subsidiary, “gill,” will unite teams working on particular brands, potentially requiring some employees to relocate studios. Furthermore, Yves mentioned that this investment would facilitate the rapid implementation of changes we’ve been pondering for a while, with the ultimate goal being to prioritize creating distinctive games and enhancing player satisfaction in our daily operations.

What About the Other Ubisoft Games?

Absolutely, it’s worth noting that Ubisoft has a wide range of franchises beyond their top three. This array encompasses several live-service games and more recent releases as well.

  • Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, For Honor, Skull & Bones, The Division, Motorfest, Just Dance, Riders Republic, Prince of Persia, Star Wars: Outlaws, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Rayman, Anno

Several games belonging to the following series are being worked on right now: Tom Clancy’s The Division Resurgence, renovations for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Splinter Cell, as well as a yet-unnamed Rayman title, among others.

What does Tencent’s investment into its top three subsidiaries imply for the remaining games under Ubisoft’s umbrella? According to an internal email obtained by TopMob, Ubisoft leadership is reassuring employees that their contributions remain important. However, some employees are skeptical. “We feel disheartened if we’re not part of the big three,” a current Ubisoft employee expressed. “They can say these things in an email, but we sense where their focus lies.

Based on the official announcement, Ubisoft plans to foster the development of their iconic series like Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon and The Division. They aim to speed up the progress of top-performing games, experiment with groundbreaking technologies for selected upcoming titles, all while maintaining the production of advanced game engines and online services.
