What FromSoftware’s Next Game Could Take From Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn

What FromSoftware's Next Game Could Take From Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn

Highlights

  • Flintlock’s reputation multiplier adds depth to combat strategy, a feature FromSoftware could benefit from borrowing in their next game.
  • The armor synergy system in Flintlock enhances gameplay by granting bonuses for matching armor sets, a mechanic worth incorporating.
  • Flintlock’s firearm counter mechanic, reminiscent of Bloodborne, should make a comeback in FromSoft’s future titles for added challenge.

As a long-time fan and avid gamer with countless hours spent exploring FromSoftware’s intricately designed worlds, I’ve grown to appreciate the depth and complexity their games bring to the table. However, even for a seasoned Soulslike veteran like myself, Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn manages to stand out with its unique features that add exciting twists to the beloved genre.

FromSoftware is undeniably the trailblazer and reigning monarch in the Soulslike genre. At their weakest, their Soulslike games rank among the finest the genre has produced, including the acclaimed “Dark Souls” series, “Bloodborne,” “Sekiro,” and most recently, “Elden Ring.” Although “Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn” may not reach those lofty heights, it strives to do so and brings some fresh ideas to the table.

Recently debuted, “Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn” has received mixed reviews, with a Metacritic score of 71. Yet, despite the average critical response, this Soulslike title offers numerous enjoyable aspects worth exploring. Spanning approximately 10 hours, “Flintlock’s” captivating narrative introduces several unique twists on classic Soulslike elements, which could potentially inspire FromSoftware’s upcoming project.

Features FromSoftware Could Borrow From Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn

A Souls Multiplier

By far one of Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn‘s best features is its Reputation multiplier. In Flintlock, the currency that’s gained from killing enemies and used to unlock new skills and upgrade weapons and armor is named Reputation, and when players enter a fight they’ll see a small multiplier appear right next to their temporary Reputation counter.

As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I can tell you that there’s nothing quite like the thrill of building up a formidable multiplier in a fast-paced action game. With every successful attack, counter, or parry against my opponent, the multiplier grows stronger, giving me a sense of power and momentum.

An Armor Synergy System

An excellent addition that FromSoftware could adopt in their upcoming game, as showcased in “Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn,” is the Armor Synergy system. In this game, players are provided with three distinct armor slots – one for a shoulder piece, one for a helmet, and one for gauntlets. Players have the freedom to combine any armor they desire. However, when they put on two or more identical armor sets simultaneously, they receive an Armor Synergy perk. These benefits include the capacity to transfer curses among enemies and reacquiring a Black Powder Charge upon eliminating an enemy using a firearm or explosion.

The Return of Firearm Counters

I’ve been thoroughly engrossed in “Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn,” and I can’t help but notice the intriguing firearm combat system that bears a striking resemblance to what we’ve experienced in “Bloodborne.” Though FromSoftware has previously employed this mechanic, it was conspicuously absent from both “Dark Souls 3” and “Elden Ring.” I sincerely hope they bring it back in their next project.

Some More Direct Side Quests

As a fan of FromSoftware’s intricate RPGs, I can’t help but appreciate their unique take on side quests. In games such as “Dark Souls” and “Elden Ring,” NPC encounters occur spontaneously in the wild. Once interacted with, these conversations often initiate a side quest for the player. The challenge lies in locating the NPCs again – either by chance during exploration or by deciphering contextual clues from the initial conversation.
