What Happened to Overhaul After The Final War?

Ever since a benefactor from the Shie Hassaikai rescued me off the streets when I was just a kid, I’ve felt an unpayable debt to this Yakuza boss. Overhaul, that’s me, was driven by a deep sense of gratitude to restore the once-great Shie Hassaikai to its former glory, before Quirks even emerged.

After the Final War in My Hero Academia, having been defeated severely by Deku and Shigaraki Tomura and longing to see his ailing boss, how did Overhaul’s life unfold following his horrific experiments on Eri, which left her traumatized and rendered Quirkless?

Who is Overhaul?

On a Quest to Ascend The Hassaikai to its Former Glory Days

Arc Shie Hassaikai
Chapters 122 – 162
Season 4

Previously known as Chisaki, this individual once held the position of head within the organized crime group, Shie Hassaikai, in the Yakuza. Before his association with the Yakuza, Chisaki had different circumstances; he was under the care of All For One and Dr. Kyudai Garaki, sharing an orphanage with Toya Todoroki. He was also a potential host for All For One’s powers.

  • In Chapter 419, All For One reveals that Overhauls Quirk was used to create a crude copy of Shigaraki Tomura’s Quirk Decay.
  • As Overhaul previously lived in the facility, Dr. Garaki removed the Quirk’s regenerative aspect while leaving its destructive properties.

While growing up in the orphanage, Overhaul came across a book that proposed an intriguing idea: a virus transmitted globally via mice could be responsible for the mysterious appearance of extraordinary powers. Although this theory wasn’t backed by solid proof, it struck a chord with Overhaul, and he remained convinced that these abilities were a manifestation of illness carried by mice – a belief that stayed with him throughout his life.

1. I’m deeply in debt to the Boss for everything. And those underhanded pretenders pushed the Boss into a tight spot… If things go smoothly and we become successful… I’ll pay it all back. You’re going to find it wonderful, Boss… (Informal and casual)

2. Everything I have is due to the Boss. And those phony heroes cornered the Boss… If our plan works out and we make it big… I’ll return the favor. You’re going to adore it, Boss… (More formal but still easy to read)

Chisaki struggles with mysophobia, which means he has an intense fear of germs. Even the slightest contact with something dirty can cause him to develop hives. However, in a flashback, it didn’t appear that he had this phobia because he would fight civilians without any signs of hive outbreaks. During battles, particularly when fighting Deku or any battle Overhaul participated in, his hives become visible on his face. It’s plausible that his belief that Quirks are a disease could be the cause of this condition.

Over time, I found myself under the protection of the former Hassaikai leader, who rescued me from a life on the streets. This act filled me with an immense sense of gratitude towards him. Consequently, my heart yearned for the Yakuza to regain their former prestige, a time before Quirks, Heroes, and Villains. However, Overhaul’s methods to achieve this deviated significantly from the traditional Yakuza path. Upon discovering Eri’s unique ability, Rewind, he subjected her to cruel experiments, manipulating and reassembling her body without her consent. This left young Eri deeply scarred by his actions.

In my fervor, I made a series of blunders that would ultimately jeopardize my aspirations. My initial error was aligning myself with the nefarious League of Villains, a move that culminated in the cold-blooded murder of Magne, which enraged Himiko Toga and Twice, who vowed revenge for their slain comrade.

The second catastrophic mistake I made was allowing Eri to slip through my fingers. This led Deku and Mirio on a relentless pursuit to rescue her, a mission that eventually drew in the Pro Heroes. After Overhaul’s defeat and retreat to the villains’ lair, the League of Villains stepped in, resulting in a tragic confrontation that claimed lives among both police and Pro Hero ranks.

After incapacitating the previous leader of the Shie Hassaikai organization, Overhaul assumed control. But during an encounter with the League of Villains, Mr. Compress and Tomura Shigaraki each exacted revenge on one of his arms, rendering him powerless since his Quirk requires his hands to function. With Overhaul now devoid of his Quirk, it also means the former Yakuza Boss will continue to be in a comatose state. This turn of events has stripped Overhaul of all his aspirations, as Shigaraki also seized the drug derived from Eri’s Quirk. Passionate about reviving the Yakuza and restoring them to their former glory, Overhaul is left broken and despondent, consumed by thoughts of his losses.

What Happened to Overhaul After The Final War?

Nothing But a Shell of Himself, Chisaki Yearns to See The Former Boss

In the heart-pounding Paranormal Liberation War saga, it was All For One who orchestrated a daring prison break, setting free a multitude of villains and criminals by unleashing Near High-End Nomus against Tartarus. This massive escape allowed Lady Nagant to liberate Overhaul, a man longing for a reunion with the former Yakuza Boss, yearning to make amends for past wrongs.

Despite being bewildered and distraught over his role in putting his superior in a coma, all Overhaul desired was to meet his boss, consenting to assist anyone if they’d escort him there, even Lady Nagant. Following Deku’s victory against Lady Nagant, Overhaul grew enraged when she was apprehended by the heroes, as no one else was willing to take him to visit his boss. However, after this, Deku proposed a deal to Overhaul. If he were to express remorse and channel the same emotions towards his boss towards Eri, Deku would be ready to uphold the agreement between Lady Nagant and Overhaul.

After the Great War, Deku made sure all his pledges were kept, including revealing Tomura Shigaraki’s last words to Spinner and upholding his promise to Chisaki. In Chapter 427, it was Chisaki who managed to meet with his former superior from the Shie Hassaikai again. Earlier, Chisaki had left the leader of the Shie Hassaikai in a comatose state; thus, he was surprised to find him awake and seemingly well.

You strayed away from the path of humanity. That’s the result.

– Former Shie Hassaikai Boss to Chisaki

Through advancements in medical technology, the once Yakuza member managed to overcome the impact of Overhaul’s Quirk. In our discussion, Overhaul exhibited genuine sorrow and regret for his actions. Despite being callous towards others during this period, using them as tools or sacrifices to further his ambitions, Overhaul held a deep respect for the former Yakuza boss, revealing his vulnerable side only in his presence.

  • Eri is the granddaughter of the former Yakuza boss, with a mutant Quirk yet to be seen within the family.
  • The former boss disagreed with Chisaki’s methods, requesting him to leave if he did not follow their ways.

Throughout the discussion, Chisaki keeps expressing regret for his past actions. Yet, he’s relieved to see that the boss is okay. As the only person who had influence over Chisaki, his former boss also scolded him severely for everything he did, criticizing his actions and insisting that Chisaki should apologize for his wrongdoings against her for the remainder of his life. It seems plausible that his former boss also believed he contributed to Eri’s suffering and declared he would stand by Chisaki, constantly reproaching him for his behavior until his passing.
