What If …? Season 3 Director Admits Missed Opportunity

Summary

  • Andrews wished he’d delved more into specific characters like Storm and Wolverine in Season 3.
  • Lack of communication about X-Men rights led to missed opportunities in storytelling.
  • Uncertain licensing complications with Marvel, Disney, Sony, and Fox impacted character inclusions.

As a longtime comic book enthusiast and moviegoer, I must say that the third season of What If…? on Disney+ has certainly delivered some intriguing storylines. However, as a connoisseur of all things X-Men, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment that we didn’t get to see more mutants in this final installment. Director Bryan Andrews expressed his regret about not delving deeper into characters like Storm and Wolverine due to license complications with Marvel, Disney, Sony, and Fox.

With the third season of “What If…?” now available on Disney+, the series offers a wealth of tales. Yet, when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s an endless array of stories that might have been explored. Interestingly, director Bryan Andrews has expressed some regrets about not delving deeper into certain characters during the final season of “What If…?

These what-if scenarios you’ve presented are intriguing story possibilities! The last one about Peter Parker is particularly captivating because it introduces Ororo Munroe, also known as Storm the Goddess of Thunder, into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Essentially, this scenario implies that Storm could join the MCU, with Storm being the only mutant introduced so far, aside from Wolverine who appeared in Deadpool and Wolverine. Interestingly, it’s hinted that there might have been more mutants if Andrews had known he was allowed to introduce them.

More Mutants Could Have Been In What If …? Season 3

Andrews recently discussed with Agents of Fandom his planning for Season 3 of What If…?. He also mentioned that if he had been aware that Marvel could introduce the X-Men into the series, he would have included them. However, it seems he mistakenly believed Sony was the only company with the rights to control that particular group.

Looking back now, I realize we felt frustrated because organizing these projects takes time and effort. In retrospect, it seemed like we could have created more mutant characters this season, but we didn’t know then that Disney would regain control of the Fox properties, so we missed an opportunity to include Wolverine, unfortunately. However, there might be more opportunities in the future for crossovers, which would be fantastic! At least we managed to include Storm, and that’s great news!

Certainly license stuff is always going to be complicated when it comes to Marvel and Disney and Sony and Fox. There is going to be confusion over who has what. But it’s more than a little odd that Andrews didn’t check with anyone. Didn’t check with the attorneys at Marvel’s disposal to see if perhaps there was any change, especially since he knew that he could include Storm. That alone should have been a sign that things had changed a little.

In hindsight, it can’t be certain whether the addition of Logan or any other X-Men in Season 3 of “What If …?” would have significantly improved or worsened the series. However, it’s clear that Andrews regrets not exploring the limitations and possibilities surrounding mutants earlier in the production process. It’s worth noting that the show was likely planned long before the release of “Deadpool” and “Wolverine,” but it seems plausible that someone working for Marvel would have been aware of these upcoming films.

What If …? Season 3 debuted on Disney+ on December 22, 2024.
