This article contains spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo.
The appearance of Kalyans in the Jujutsu Kaisen sequel quickly caused problems between the Rumelians and Japanese sorcerers, who had originally hoped to live together peacefully. Now, the two groups have reached a breaking point. Their disagreements about the Kalyans have already resulted in two significant battles: one between Dabura and Yuka Okkotsu, and another between Maru and Tsurugi Okkotsu.
Even before the current conflict between the Rumelians and Jujutsu sorcerers, the Kalyans were known for causing trouble among other Simurian tribes. Their disturbing practices led many tribes to avoid contact with both the Rumelians and the Kalyans, a decision that tragically cost many lives. Sadly, a similar situation is now developing in Japan.
Kalyans Are Immortal Creatures From Simuria
Rumelians Worship Kalyans Like Gods
- Kalyans are deities to Rumelians and enemies to other Simurian tribes.
- Kalyans have an unusual diet composed of livestock and non-Rumelians.
I’ve been studying the lore of Simuria, and it’s fascinating! There are these incredible beings called Kalyans – they’re essentially immortal, though no one really knows where they came from. What’s really cool is how diverse they are; each one is totally unique. But, a lot of the Simurian tribes, especially the Deskuntes, are terrified of them. They see Kalyans as these powerful predators who need to feed on people to survive. And here’s the strange part: they only seem to eat people who aren’t from Rumelia! It’s a really weird and unsettling aspect of their existence.
For people like the Maru and Cross, known as Rumelians, the Kalyans are considered gods. A specific Kalyan even determines a Rumelian’s path as a warrior at birth. They show their deep respect by taking Kalyan names as middle names. However, this strong Kalyan-based faith led to the Deskuntes and other tribes becoming very isolated.
The Rumelians were driven to a harsh, unproductive land due to this policy of isolation. While they desired peaceful relations with other tribes in Simuria, their deeply held Kalyan beliefs made it difficult to find common ground and respect each other. For the Rumelians, their religion wasn’t just a set of beliefs – it was central to their identity, and they felt they couldn’t give it up.
Kalyans Are Different from Cursed Spirits
They Are Almost the Same but Not Quite
Viz Media - Cursed spirits are strikingly similar to Kalyans.
- Kalyans have physical forms, unlike cursed spirits.
Although Kalyans and cursed spirits seem alike, they are actually distinct entities. The Rumelians initially believed they were the same, due to a shared trait: both Kalyans and cursed spirits react when a jujutsu sorcerer defeats a cursed spirit – Kalyans cry tears, while the spirits themselves are affected. This connection was particularly striking because a Rumelian’s third eye only cries at three times: birth, the point of death, or when a Kalyan perishes.
Many people from Rumelia, particularly Osuki and his followers, think of cursed spirits as being similar to the Kalyans they revere – essentially, a Japanese take on the same kind of being. The key difference is that Kalyans have actual bodies, while cursed spirits are purely made of negative energy. Also, Rumelians can survive shedding tears after defeating a cursed spirit, but if a Kalyan dies, the emotional and mental strain is so severe it can kill them.
Viz Media Although the Rumelians and cursed spirits are very different, the Rumelians don’t want the spirits destroyed. This creates a major issue for Jujutsu sorcerers, who must eliminate these spirits to keep everyone safe and maintain order. The dangerous Makyo desperately needs a powerful purification ritual, but the Rumelians’ interference means any attempt to cleanse it could trigger a full-scale war.

Yuji Itadori’s Aura Is Kalyan
Osuki Confirms Yuji Itadori’s Aura Isn’t Earthling
Image via MAPPA. The latest chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 20, revealed a significant detail about Yuji Itadori: he possesses the aura of a Kalyan. According to the character Osuki, this means Yuji is no longer fully human. Because Kalyans are likened to cursed spirits inhabiting a physical body, Yuji is essentially a cursed spirit with a human form, rather than a normal person.
He’s an Earthling, right? But his aura is Kalyan! —Osuki to Yuji Itadori
Yuji Itadori is unique among jujutsu sorcerers due to his extraordinary lineage and experiences. His father is the reborn form of Sukuna’s twin brother, and his mother is actually Kenjaku. Furthermore, Sukuna lived inside Yuji for a significant period. He also ingested death paintings, which likely changed his body. As a result, Yuji doesn’t age, and someone compared his aura to a Kalyan in the JJK Modulo community.
