As a devoted fan of both sci-fi and Bong Joon-ho’s masterful storytelling, I can hardly contain my excitement for the release of Mickey17! Having read Edward Ashton’s Mickey7 series and devoured every frame of Parasite, I find myself in a unique position to appreciate the blend of these two brilliant works.

In January, director Bong Joon-ho, known for his work on Parasite, will bring us a new project – an adaptation of Mickey17. This intriguing science fiction film, which has just unveiled its first trailer, features Robert Pattinson from The Batman in the lead role. Warner Bros. is handling the release, with plans to premiere it around the same time as the Korean New Year next year. However, even with the trailer out, there’s a lot of curiosity about what exactly Mickey17 is based upon.

The upcoming Warner Bros. movie by director Joon-ho, who previously adapted “Snowpiercer” from a graphic novel, is another adaptation for him. However, unlike Snowpiercer, the new film, titled Mickey17, derives from the novel “Mickey7” written by Edward Ashton. The question arises as to why the movie and book bear different names, and what narratives are being conveyed in each medium.

What is the Book Mickey7 About?

What is Bong Joon-Ho's Mickey 17 Based On?

In 2022, Edward Ashton, who co-wrote the adaptation of Mickey17 with Joon-ho, published Mickey7, the first book in a series. The second book, titled Antimatter Blues, was released last year. The third and final book is expected to be out soon, although details are scarce. The story revolves around Mickey, a disposable employee or Expendable, who is sent on a mission to colonize the ice planet Niflheim because he can regenerate in a new body while retaining most of his memories from the previous one. After his sixth death, Mickey realizes his true nature and purpose. The story truly begins with the seventh version of Mickey, or Mickey7. When Mickey7 goes missing on a mission and is believed to be dead, an eighth Mickey is created. However, Mickey7 didn’t die, leading to both versions being alive simultaneously. If it’s discovered that there are duplicate Expendables, both will be hunted and eliminated, forcing Mickey7 into hiding and keeping his secret from the rest of the population.

On Niflheim, where conditions worsen daily with scarce food resources and humans finding it difficult to adapt to the planet’s atmosphere, it becomes necessary for Mickey7 to intervene. For the survival of both species, Mickey7 will eventually have to take action and ensure their safety.

What Changes Can be Expected Between the Book and Movie

It’s no wonder that, with Ashton serving as co-screenwriter, the movie adaptation heavily reflects the story from the original book. The title change appears to be due to the increased number of unique Expendables characters seen in the film, rather than depicting multiple versions of Mickey. Instead, Robert Pattinson will now have the opportunity to play eighteen distinct versions of the character. The movie maintains a similar humorous tone as the book, with Mickey17 and Mickey18 featuring comedic moments throughout the initial trailer.

Apart from collaborating with Joon-ho during the project, it was hinted that Joon-ho had a better grasp of the book than Ashton himself, with Ashton emphasizing its “must-film” scene. In an interview at SUNY Brockport, Ashton disclosed that he and Joon-ho initially discussed the book over Zoom before Joon-ho agreed to direct the film. The film adaptation will deviate from the novel in several aspects, such as increasing Mickey’s on-screen deaths by ten. However, it appears that Joon-ho has effectively translated the original book’s core themes, wit, and humor into his science fiction movie interpretation.

Mickey17 is slated to hit theaters on January 31, 2025.
