What OD’s ‘Knock’ Could Mean

Kojima Productions recently released a new trailer offering a slightly clearer look at OD, their upcoming horror game. The game generated significant excitement when it was first revealed at The Game Awards in 2023, largely because of the well-known and respected people working on it.

OD is a project bringing together the creative visions of renowned game designer Hideo Kojima and celebrated horror-comedy director Jordan Peele. This pairing suggests a game that will blend both of their distinctive styles and sensibilities. Expect a lot of hidden layers and symbolism – both creators are known for carefully crafting their work with deep meaning. Keeping this in mind, the recent OD trailer might reveal more than meets the eye.

What Does the ‘Knock‘ Mean for OD?

OD May Be About Summoning Something

The new trailer for *OD* starts with a quick shot of a card sliding under a door that can only be opened from the outside. Following that, the screen displays a few lines of text with some words hidden or blacked out.

TEN YEARS SINCE THE REDACTED

The trailer then focuses on the back of a card that was slipped under the door. It features a warped face covered in many eyes. The main character, seemingly played by Sophia Lillis, flips the card over and reads a message: “LIGHT THE FIRES TO CELEBRATE THEIR RED REDACTED.” More text then appears on screen.

A 3D SCAN OF AN

REDACTE IN A SINISTER RITUAL

These first few moments reveal a lot. It’s clear something terrible happened in the world of OD ten years ago, and now, whatever that was, it’s happening again. While some details are hidden, it seems likely this involves the return of dangerous creatures or forces – and later events support that idea.

The message on the card appears to be important. The candle lighting shown in the trailer seems to be part of a ceremony, possibly to honor a powerful being. This celebration might be the same “sinister ritual” mentioned later, or at least connected to it – the ceremony Lillis’ character performs definitely feels ominous. As for the building featured in the trailer, it’s possible it’s connected to the entity or forces being celebrated, perhaps even based on a detailed scan of a mysterious object or place.

Knock, Knock, Monsters at the Door

Next, a clear scene unfolds: Lillis’ character walks into a room and finds a shrine decorated with candles. One candle is shaped like a baby, with its wick representing the umbilical cord, and another looks like the head of an older child. As she lights the candles, someone or something begins to knock on the door. When she lights the baby-shaped candle, a baby’s cry is heard.

The use of baby-like images suggests ideas of new beginnings, which supports the idea that the character in the trailer is linked to a frightening event from the past.

As the large candle is lit, it sets off a small carousel with a paper figure, and something monstrous creeps up behind Lillis. Although its voice is garbled, the creature seems to be warning her to either “lock the door” or “knock on the door.” The trailer concludes with the creature attacking Lillis.

What does all of this suggest about the meaning of the ‘Knock’ subtitle in OD? While it’s impossible to know for sure, considering all the clues, it seems Lillis’ character is trying to call upon a demonic or supernatural force. She appears to be doing so against her will, as she’s visibly scared, and the lack of a doorknob on the inside implies she’s trapped. The eye-shaped photo on the window, which widens when the entity appears, further suggests someone – or something – is watching.

What’s driving Lillis’ character to perform this ritual? The most straightforward explanation is that the monster seen in the trailer wants to be summoned – perhaps for a variety of reasons. However, she could also be acting under the control of people – a single leader or a larger organization. The building mentioned earlier appears connected to the supernatural being, and the reference to a “3D scan” hints at human involvement. It’s possible a group created a building based on scans of a dangerous, otherworldly design, and they’re now forcing Lillis’ character to bring the monster into our world.

The repeated “knock” could have a couple of meanings. Knocking is usually a polite way to ask to be let in, but it can also be a trick – as fans of the game *Metal Gear* will recognize. It’s an invitation to see who’s there, and depending on who’s doing the knocking, it could even be a threatening display of power, like saying, “I can either be invited in, or I’ll just come in anyway.”

Doors are a recurring and important symbol in *Death Stranding*. Hideo Kojima initially revealed the game by walking through a wooden door during an awards show, hinting at their deeper meaning. These doors might represent boundaries between different realms – like the world of the living and the dead, or the human and the supernatural. Something is trying to cross these thresholds, and it’s determined to get through, one way or another.
