Summary
- 2025 will see major MTG sets like Innistrad Remastered, Aetherdrift, and Tarkir: Dragonstorm back to back.
- New Universes Beyond sets, including one featuring Final Fantasy, will be Standard-legal this year.
- Magic: The Gathering Arena will support most 2025 sets, with enhancements to events and game modes.
As a long-time Magic: The Gathering enthusiast who has seen many expansions come and go, I must say that the lineup for 2025 looks absolutely thrilling! With a mix of familiar favorites like Edge of Eternities and exciting crossovers such as Spider-Man and Marvel, it seems that Wizards of the Coast is really stepping up their game.
Being someone who has collected cards since Alpha, I can tell you that the prospect of exploring new planets, battling villains like Tezzeret, and even diving into the world of comics with Spider-Man has me positively giddy! And let’s not forget about the space-opera release Edge of Eternities – it’s been a long time coming, and I can hardly wait to see what they have in store.
Now, as someone who’s seen their fair share of expansions, I must admit that my wallet might be groaning at the thought of all these new cards. But hey, who needs sleep when there are so many exciting decks to build, right?
And on a lighter note, I can’t help but wonder what kind of shenanigans Tezzeret will get up to in his return. Will he cause trouble for the Multiverse again, or perhaps try to reform? Only time (and 2025) will tell!
Enthusiasts of Magic: The Gathering have plenty to anticipate this upcoming year, even amidst debates concerning the integration of Universes Beyond sets into Constructed formats such as Standard. In 2025, there are plans for several significant launches in the trading card game (TCG). At present, a majority of 2025’s schedule is outlined, although adjustments may occur, and further set releases and products might be revealed at a later time. As of now, Magic: The Gathering will kick off 2025 with a double whammy, launching two sets consecutively – one in late January and another, the first Standard-legal release, in mid-February.
Innistrad Remastered – January 24, 2025
Kicking things off is Innistrad Remastered, an exciting return to one of Magic: The Gathering’s most cherished planes from its history. In 2025, some of the game’s Headliner cards will make their debut in Innistrad Remastered and be included in every major set release, starting with a special version of Edgar Markov.
Innistrad Remastered Prerelease events will start on January 17, 2025.
Aetherdrift – February 14, 2025
In the second series of the year, we have Aetherdrift, an exciting event spanning over three distinct realms where 10 squads engage in a lethal race to win the coveted Aetherspark. The Aetherspark is not only the main attraction of Aetherdrift but also succeeds Edgar Markov as its marquee card. Debuting in 2025, Aetherdrift will mark the beginning of Standard-legal sets and undoubtedly bring about a transformation in gameplay dynamics within Constructed formats. As always, this set will make its appearance on Magic: The Gathering Arena.
Aetherdrift products will include:
- Play Boosters, now in display boxes of 30 boosters
- Collector Boosters
- Aetherdrift Bundle
- Finish Line Bundle
- Prerelease Pack
- Two MTG Commander Decks – one Temur (Blue, Green, and Red), called Living Energy, and the other Esper (Blue, Black, and White), called Eternal Might
Tarkir: Dragonstorm – April 11, 2025
A new collection, Tarkir: Dragonstorm, transports fans to a recognizable locale, offering a glimpse into an alternate timeline of Tarkir. In this world, the renowned Planeswalker Sarkhan Vol has altered time to an epoch dominated by dragons. This set features Magic: The Gathering’s wedges, intriguing three-way color combinations that encompass Jeskai (Blue, Red, and White), Sultai (Blue, Black, and Green), Temur (Blue, Red, and Green), Abzan (Black, Green, and White), and Mardu (Red, Black, and White).
In this upcoming set, Wizards of the Coast has confirmed that there will be numerous Dragon creatures and the clans won’t completely disappear. However, it remains uncertain what types of products Tarkir will offer. It seems that, similar to Aetherdrift, the final product lineup is likely to stay the same.
MTG x Final Fantasy Universes Beyond Set – June 13, 2025
As a devoted fan, I can hardly contain my excitement for the first “Magic: The Gathering” Universes Beyond set of 2025, which seems to be inspired by the iconic characters, items, and locales from the entire saga of Final Fantasy games, all the way up to Final Fantasy 16. Given that the UB sets in “MTG” will become Standard-legal in 2025, it’s not too far-fetched to imagine they may also introduce pre-constructed Eternal decks and an array of additional products, such as main sets, to further enrich our gaming experience.
Edge of Eternities – August 1, 2025
The third and final “Magic” Universe release of the year is titled Edge of Eternities, a space opera that Wizards of the Coast has been talking about for some time. This set takes us on an interstellar journey with cards focusing on planets and extraterrestrial cultures, but specific details are scarce at present. It’s confirmed to have traditional sci-fi elements like spaceships and will introduce the return of the recurring antagonist Tezzeret.
An image believed to be the marquee card from Magic: The Gathering’s Edge of Eternities expansion surfaced online, showcasing a massive cosmic entity referred to as Sothera, The Void Titan – which resembles a colossal black hole.
MTG x Spider-Man Universes Beyond Set – TBA
The upcoming “Magic: The Gathering” Spider-Man collection, due out in 2025, remains enveloped in secrecy for now, with no specific release period or date announced yet. However, it’s expected to feature a comprehensive lineup of products such as several “MTG” Commander decks and themed packs. It’s predicted that the complete unveiling of this set will occur in the second quarter of 2025, with a potential release window falling between September and October.
The Magic: The Gathering Spider-Man collection is part of an extensive, long-term Marvel collaboration, hinting at additional ventures down the line. A joint Marvel & MTG Secret Lair release occurred in 2024, and further collaborations are expected for 2025.
Unannounced MTG Universes Beyond Set and More
In summary, Wizards of the Coast has hinted at a third Universes Beyond expansion for the Magic: The Gathering game, expected to drop in 2025. As of now, the crossover’s theme remains a mystery, though it’s speculated that it will involve a significant intellectual property from the gaming world. If the Spider-Man set is released this fall, we can anticipate the announcement of the third and final Universes Beyond 2025 set somewhere between mid-year (Q2) and late-year (Q3), with the actual release happening sometime between November and December.
In summary, enhancements and new features are expected for Magic: The Gathering Arena, with improvements in its codes, events, and game modes. A majority of the 2025 sets will be accessible via the online version of the Trading Card Game (TCG).
