What to Expect From Mortal Kombat 1's Sektor and Cyrax

As a seasoned Mortal Kombat veteran with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia as I dive into the lore of the reimagined Cyrax and Sektor in Mortal Kombat 1. The gender-swap and the power armor twist are certainly intriguing, adding a fresh take on these classic characters while staying true to their roots.

In September’s conclusion, we’re eagerly anticipating the debut of an expansion for Mortal Kombat 1 titled “Khaos Reigns.” This new content will be introduced, following on from the ending of Mortal Kombat 1’s main campaign. In this continuation, Liu Kang, the God of Fire, gathers his allies once more to prevent Havik and his army from plunging their timeline into chaos. The expansion introduces several new fighters, such as Ghostface from Scream, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Conan the Barbarian, and the T-1000 from Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Additionally, three classic characters will rejoin Mortal Kombat 1, including Noob Saibot, along with updated versions of Cyrax and Sektor.

Cyrax and Sektor’s Mortal Kombat History

Cyrax, Sektor, and a third robotic Smoke character initially appeared in the 1995 arcade game “Mortal Kombat 3.” All three were previously part of the Lin Kuei assassin clan, which underwent cyborg transformations as part of the Cyber Initiative. The Grandmaster of the Lin Kuei believed that this process would enhance their ninja abilities and compelled many members to undergo it against their will. Sektor, the grandmaster’s son, was the first to volunteer for cyberization and became known as LK-9T9, a red cyborg. Later, Sektor murdered his father and took over leadership of the Lin Kuei.

As a devoted fan, I’ve always admired the unique journey of Cyrax, one of the early Lin Kuei members who underwent cyberization like Sektor. Unlike his counterpart, however, Cyrax frequently harbored doubts about the Cyber Initiative and the transformation it brought. In the 2011 version of Mortal Kombat, we even see Cyrax in his human Lin Kuei form clashing with Sektor, a human, in resistance to the cyberization process. Yet, these internal struggles didn’t prevent him from being forced into the cybernetic lifestyle across various timelines, becoming LK-4D4, a yellow cyborg. Once transformed, Cyrax is typically tasked with pursuing runaway Lin Kuei who oppose the initiative, such as Kuai Liang Sub-Zero.

Mortal Kombat 1’s Cyrax and Sektor Explained

In the fresh timeline established by Titan Liu Kang, some well-known characters from Mortal Kombat 1 have undergone a reboot, like Kuai Liang transforming into Scorpion and Baraka becoming a sick Edenian rather than a demon. In this new world, Cyrax and Sektor, who were previously male characters, have been changed to female counterparts. Unlike their previous iterations in the other timelines, they no longer function as cyborgs but instead operate power armor to wield their traditional mechanical weapons. As of now, this new armor doesn’t have a designated name, but it looks like Bi-Han Sub-Zero is spearheading the initiative as he can be seen commanding the cybernetic duo in Cyrax’s gameplay trailer.

Despite not being cyberized, Cyrax still has qualms with her Lin Kuei leaders; she is shown confronting Bi-Han about calling off their attack on Kuai Liang Scorpion’s wedding to Harumi Shirai. Meanwhile, Sektor remains set in her ways as a ruthless assassin, even hinting at the armor being a step towards full cyberization in an intro dialogue sequence with Cyrax. A bit of Sektor has changed, however, as in an intro dialogue sequence with Scorpion, it’s revealed that Madam Bo is Sektor’s mother. Sektor’s mother and father are never named in past timelines, but Madam Bo is suspected to be a gender-swapped version of Bo’ Rai Cho, the man who trained Liu Kang and Kung Lao in prior timelines.

Cyrax and Sektor’s Potential Fates

Based on Cyrax’s hesitation to attack Scorpion’s wedding, his disagreements with the Lin Kuei’s leadership and the Cyber Initiative, it seems likely that Cyrax may choose to defect from the Lin Kuei and join Scorpion’s newly formed Shirai Ryu clan. If Sektor manages to survive the events of Khaos Reigns, he could potentially upgrade his power armor into a new type of cyberization for Mortal Kombat 2. In case Bi-Han Sub-Zero dies despite being corrupted by Havik, there’s a possibility that Sektor might resurrect Bi-Han as a cybernetic version of Noob Saibot within the Lin Kuei. These scenarios could continue the timeline of Mortal Kombat 1 by reintroducing classic characters in a fresh and intriguing manner.

In the latest Mortal Kombat, it’s me, the gamer, who can’t take on Cyrax and Sektor directly in single-player mode. But here’s the kicker: these iconic characters are still part of the action! They serve as support Kameos in multiplayer matches, helping shape the outcome of battles from behind the scenes. So, even though I can’t fight them one on one, they’re still a force to be reckoned with!
