What to Expect From Pokemon TCG’s Mega Evolution Series

Approximately every few years, The Pokemon Company launches a fresh set of additions for the Pokemon Trading Card Game, each introducing novel gameplay elements. These series, or blocks, are typically unveiled alongside a brand-new Pokemon video game that introduces a new batch of Pokemon. Starting with Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, most major titles in the Pokemon series have begun a new phase for the Pokemon Trading Card Game. However, for the first time in several years, the next set of cards for the Pokemon Trading Card Game won’t be connected directly to the launch of a Pokemon game, at least not a primary one.

In October, the new spin-off game for the Kalos region, titled Pokemon Legends: Z-A, will be available on both Nintendo Switch and its successor. In celebration of this release, The Pokemon Company is introducing a brand new expansion set for the Pokemon Trading Card Game (PTCG) called Mega Evolution. This set will hit the shelves on September 26th, effectively concluding the current Scarlet and Violet block in the PTCG. With the arrival of Mega Evolution, a new chapter in the game’s history will begin, focusing on the unique gameplay mechanic that gives it its name.

The Pokemon TCG’s Mega Evolution Series is Picking Up Where Scarlet and Violet Left Off

In contrast to the striking disparities between the Sword and Shield, and Scarlet and Violet game blocks, the distinctions between Scarlet and Violet and Mega Evolution aren’t as pronounced. The Mega Evolution series will maintain numerous new mechanics, design alterations, and features that were ushered in with Scarlet and Violet, like the revamped rarity system, Pokemon ex cards, and the utilization of gray card borders. What sets it apart from its predecessors, undeniably, is its incorporation of Mega Evolution Pokemon ex cards.

In a groundbreaking move, the Mega Evolution collection introduces an entirely new level of scarcity known as Mega Ultra Rare. These exceptionally rare cards are distinctively golden in color and boast exclusive artwork, setting them apart from the rest.

The Mega Evolution Pokemon Ex Cards Will Not Be the Same as Their X and Y Counterparts

In the core Pokemon games, Mega Evolution serves as a unique feature that enables players to transform select Pokemon into more powerful forms. These mega-evolved Pokemon frequently exhibit distinct types and abilities compared to their standard versions. The upcoming Mega Evolution Pokémon trading card game (TCG) extensions will incorporate this mechanic into the TCG experience. Although Mega Evolution has been featured in the Pokémon Trading Card Game previously, during its X and Y era, this new version of the card type will display some notable differences in several aspects.

Mega Evolution EX Pokémon cards, such as the recently unveiled Mega Lucario EX, boast an impressive amount of hit points (HP) and potent attacks. Unlike typical defeat, they yield three prize cards instead of the conventional two for standard EX Pokémon. Unlike M Pokémon-EX from the X and Y set, Mega Evolution EX Pokémon do not evolve from other EX Pokémon; rather, they transform directly from regular Pokémon cards, similar to a standard EX Pokémon evolution process. When a player plays a Mega Evolution EX card, their turn does not automatically conclude as it would with M Pokémon-EX cards.

Types of Cards Included in the Upcoming Mega Evolution Set

  • 180+ new cards in total
  • Nearly a dozen Mega Evolution Pokemon ex
  • 15+ Trainer cards
  • 50+ Pokemon and Trainer cards with unique artwork, including Ultra Rares and Special Illustration Rares

Although the Japanese edition of the Pokémon Trading Card Game’s Mega Evolution set has been launched, The Pokémon Company has not disclosed an official card list for its international counterpart yet. However, they have confirmed that Mega Evolution will include over 180 new cards, featuring 10 Mega Evolution Pokémon EX, around 15 ordinary Trainer cards, and more than 50 Pokémon and Trainer cards with distinctive artwork. It’s uncertain how long the Pokémon TCG’s Mega Evolution Series will run or if it will persist beyond the release of the as-of-now unrevealed Generation 10 Pokémon games, but it appears that it will be around for some time to come.
