Sloclap, creators of the game “Sifu”, are currently developing a third-person soccer game titled “Rematch”. This upcoming title has been generating a lot of buzz recently. In the past few weeks, Sloclap has hosted closed beta tests for “Rematch” on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, drawing in soccer enthusiasts from across the globe. The latest Steam beta test for “Rematch” boasted over 159,000 concurrent players, making it one of the top 10 most played games on the platform at that moment. Remarkably, the success of this beta even surpassed the peak active player counts of well-known soccer titles like EA Sports FC 25 and FIFA 22.
The upcoming game titled “Rematch” is set for release on June 19, 2025, approximately four years following the initial release of “Sifu”. With the game’s official launch just a few weeks away, developer Sloclap has decided against conducting additional beta tests. Though some may find this news disappointing, the final version of the game promises to be exciting. Upon its release, “Rematch” will offer multiple modes and arenas, and it is expected to roll out numerous seasonal updates in the ensuing months.
Rematch is a New Sports Game from the Creators of Sifu
Rematch Has an Arcadey Gameplay Loop and Several Multiplayer Modes
While Rematch is primarily a soccer game, it sets itself apart from other soccer titles such as FIFA. Unlike games like FIFA with a realistic visual style, Rematch adopts a stylized look, resembling Sifu in some ways. It doesn’t feature any real-world teams, players, or locations. Instead, it leans more towards arcade-style gameplay, differing from most other soccer games. In Rematch, soccer fundamentals are present, but elements like penalties, fouls, offsides, and mid-game pauses are absent. Matches in this game are swift and to the point, often lasting roughly 7 to 8 minutes.
In the game Rematch, while it is primarily marketed as a 5v5 multiplayer title, there are actually several ways to play it. At launch, four distinct multiplayer modes will be offered: 3v3, 4v4, ranked 5v5, and standard 5v5. However, the team size cannot be altered during a game; instead, each player’s role can be adjusted. In Rematch, players have the ability to swiftly switch between attacking, defending, and goalkeeping positions based on the game’s current state. The first player to enter their team’s box assumes the goalkeeper role, but if they leave, another player can take over.
Rematch Won’t Have a Lot of Single-Player Content At Launch, But It May Be Added in the Future
In line with today’s multiplayer-oriented soccer games, Rematch primarily caters to multiple players. It boasts minimal standalone content for solo play, offering only practice and free modes that can be enjoyed offline. Despite not initially planning a one-player campaign, Sloclap aims to introduce an offline mode with AI-controlled teammates by 2026. They also hint at potential future additions of single-player content, like solo workshops, to Rematch.
At the game’s release, subscribers of both Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass won’t have to pay any additional fees to gain access to Rematch.
Compared to Most AAA Titles, Rematch is Fairly Cheap
In contrast to many modern AAA games which typically sell for over $80, the game Rematch offers a more affordable price range. The standard version of the game retails at just $30, while the Pro and Elite versions are priced at $40 and $50 respectively. These premium editions primarily include extra cosmetics and Captain Pass upgrade tickets. Additionally, those who purchase the Pro or Elite editions of Rematch will gain early access to the game by three days. Despite being a paid title, it’s important to mention that Rematch also incorporates microtransactions. However, Sloclap has assured players that the purchasable items in Rematch will mainly focus on cosmetic enhancements without any pay-to-win features.
