As someone who’s spent countless hours exploring the wilds of Skyrim and battling dinosaurs in Jurassic World Evolution, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming release of Turok: Origins! The trailer alone has me longing for the thrill of running through a jungle filled with towering fungi, alien vegetation, and, of course, prehistoric creatures.
At the 2024 Game Awards, Florida-based video game developer and publisher Saber Interactive revealed that they are working on a new installment titled Turok: Origins. Originating from the 1950s comics called Turok, Son of Stone, the Turok series is a classic video game franchise that debuted on the Nintendo 64 in 1997 by the now-defunct publisher Acclaim Entertainment. After its introduction, Turok has had difficulty finding a place on modern consoles, with only two titles released beyond its 64-bit era: Turok: Evolution and the 2008 reboot of Turok. So far, just a short trailer and some official posts have been shared for Turok: Origins, but gamers are eagerly anticipating what the game will offer when it’s released in 2025.
Turok: Origins’ Gameplay and Setting Could Pull From The Past
In the 1950s, the character known as Turok was first presented as an adult Native American man who uncovers prehistoric dinosaurs and creatures in a hidden valley in North America prior to European settlement. By the 1990s, Valiant Comics revamped Turok, with the main character now being from the 18th century and the valley renamed as the Lost Land. In this strange land, time holds no significance; demons, dinosaurs, and aliens coexist. Later in the 1990s, Acclaim Comics reimagined Turok once more, making it a series where members of various Native American tribes assume the role of Turok, each one committing to safeguarding the boundary between Earth, the Lost Land, and other dimensions from interdimensional threats.
The version of Turok from Acclaim Comics serves as the foundation for most Turok video games, with exceptions like the 2008 Turok game where Joseph Turok is a space marine battling dinosaurs on an alien planet. Generally, Turok games offer first-person and some third-person gameplay, allowing players to ride prehistoric creatures like pterosaurs. The gameplay style of Turok combines the shooting mechanics from Doom with the exploration elements from Tomb Raider, providing a diverse array of sci-fi weapons for players to use against prehistoric and futuristic enemies. In addition to fighting dinosaurs and other creatures, Turok games typically offer non-linear worlds filled with puzzles and collectibles like Chronoscepter and Nuke pieces. If all these items are found, players can assemble these weapons near the end of Turok 1 and 2.
To date, a total of six core Turok games, belonging to the Turok series, have been launched. These include:
- Turok: Dinosaur Hunter
- Turok 2: Seeds of Evil
- Turok: Rage Wars
- Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion
- Turok: Evolution
- 2008’s Turok
What Gamers Can Expect from Turok: Origins in 2025
The trailer for Turok: Origins offers a quick peek into the game’s action and settings. It begins with a scene of what seems to be the Lost Land, showcasing a Mayan-style temple and a jungle teeming with towering fungi and other strange or prehistoric plant life. A character dressed as a Native American is shown fleeing from dinosaurs, engaging one with a high-tech axe, and then shooting it with a blue arrow. This triggers the dinosaur’s DNA to be absorbed into the man’s suit, reminiscent of how the Dovahkiin collects dragon souls in Skyrim. As an alien spaceship obscures the sun, two more Native American figures appear, hinting at a possible three-player cooperative mode.
Towards the end of the trailer for the game Turok: Origins, we see the primary character, who seems to be an early version of Turok, engaging in combat with dinosaurs. This is unlike most Turok games where the action is usually presented in first-person view. The hero employs various weapons such as laser guns, a modern shotgun, a futuristic bow like the famous Tek bow, and a large knife or machete against both dinosaurs and a colossal scorpion. In one scene, he uses what looks like vines or tendrils from his suit to lift and smash a dinosaur. This could be demonstrating the new DNA abilities of Turok: Origins, which might allow players to modify their suits and upgrade them by using enemy DNA.
A Potential Release Window for Turok: Origins
As of now, the release date for the game Turok: Origins remains undisclosed, but you can add it to your wishlist and anticipate playing it on PlayStation 5, Steam, and Xbox Series X and S. Given Saber Interactive’s recent development and release patterns, we can make an educated guess about when Turok: Origins might come out. Their most recently published game, A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead, was released in October 2024, but it was first announced in 2021 and had its first trailer in June 2024. Similarly, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, which was first announced in 2021, was initially scheduled for a 2023 release before being delayed to September 2024. Taking these examples into account, it’s plausible that Turok: Origins could be launched by mid-2025 if we’re fortunate, or else it might take until around 2027.
