What to Expect From Warframe 1999’s New Minigame

As a seasoned Warframe gamer with over a decade of gaming experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic excitement about the upcoming Caliber Chicks 2 minigame. The retro-style run-and-gun action reminiscent of Contra and Metal Slug has always been my go-to for quick, adrenaline-pumping gameplay sessions when I need a break from the grind of the main game.

In the upcoming expansion for Warframe, players will encounter a fresh minigame that harks back to run-and-gun classics. This mini-game, named Caliber Chicks 2, is not primarily developed by Digital Extremes but rather by Sumo Digital. Within the game, this title has been hinted at in the lore for quite some time, with teasers appearing over a year ago. Game Rant recently interviewed Warframe‘s creative director Rebecca Ford and Caliber Chicks design director Nic Cusworth to shed light on the game’s features and rewards for players.

Warframe 1999’s Caliber Chicks Minigame Explained

Contra-Style Gameplay

Speaking about the design aspects of Caliber Chicks 2, Cusworth mentioned that classic action-shooter games, such as the Contra series, served as a significant inspiration during its creation process.

The design team at DE had created characters for Caliber Chicks and envisioned a run-and-gun style game. As Sumo, we were tasked with deciding its direction. Referencing the era we aimed for, I drew inspiration from games I was playing then, such as “Contra 3” on SNES and “Gunstar Heroes” on Megadrive. In my downtime, I’d often play “Gunstar Heroes”.

After wrapping up work, I’d usually settle down and play the game. However, my reflexes aren’t as sharp these days, making it difficult to do so. It’s worth mentioning that “Metal Slug” served as a significant inspiration for me, and it was a beacon, showcasing the pinnacle of 2D arcade gaming back then.

In addition, Cusworth provided further explanation about the game mechanics, stating that “the main gameplay cycle lasts approximately 15 minutes, divided across three extensive and diverse stages.” He also hinted at an intriguing aspect where “the game concludes with incidents propelling you back to the start of the game—but not everything remains the same. With each restart, the world becomes increasingly bizarre, and the challenges grow more complex.” These ideas, reminiscent of time-travel concepts, align well with the themes found in Warframe: 1999.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but share my excitement as Ford delves deeper into how this upcoming game will resonate within the vibrant Warframe community. The game is set to introduce global leaderboards, offering players an enticing challenge to compete for the top spot, fostering repeated gameplay and fostering a sense of camaraderie among us fans. This retro-style arcade game, as Ford puts it, is being meticulously crafted not just for entertainment, but primarily to enrich the worldbuilding experience—making the Höllvania Central Mall mission hub pulsate with life.

The Rewards In Warframe’s Caliber Chicks 2

Ford elaborated on the benefits that gamers can gain by participating in this arcade mini-game, several of which connect to the upcoming content in Warframe: 1999. Additionally, participants can earn a variety of cosmetic prizes as part of this event.

“Anyone investing time and effort into side content should be rewarded in some way. If players get far enough in Caliber Chicks they can earn a couple of glyphs and an emblem as rewards to use anywhere in the Origin System. Also, as you rank up in The Hex Syndicate with the Protoframes, Aoi will start offering Somachord tracks from Caliber Chicks to unlock.”

Additionally, Ford explained the amount players would need to put in to obtain these Warframe rewards. When questioned about whether the team was worried that there might be a grind for the minigame, she pointed out that “there are tiny bits of cosmetic items concealed within the mini-game, but [they] aim to fairly reward those who feel involved with these side activities,” highlighting its purpose as supplementary content.
