What Tools to Upgrade First in Fields of Mistria

As a seasoned adventurer with years of mining and farming under my belt, let me guide you through the intricacies of tool and armor upgrades in this game.

In the world of Fields of Mistria, farming tools aren’t immediately given to you at the beginning. Instead, you’ll start with a hoe and a watering can, with an axe coming your way by Spring 2. You can purchase more advanced tools in Mistria or even forge them yourself. There are eight types of tools available in Fields of Mistria, so it’s essential to know which ones you should prioritize upgrading first. The choice will largely depend on your playstyle. If you enjoy farming and gathering resources, then you might want to focus on improving the watering can before moving onto a better pickaxe.

On the first day of Spring, Celine will give you a hoe, while Hayden will hand over a watering can.

In August 2024 during Early Access, you may acquire up to Silver-tier gear for Fields of Mistria. It’s worth noting that Gold Ore and Mistril Ore have been discovered but are yet to be accessible. Instead, tool upgrades can be used effectively on multiple tiles at once by holding down the action key or left mouse button. As of now, the available types of equipment include:

  • Copper (range covers 3 tiles)
  • Iron (range covers a 3×3 area)
  • Silver (range covers a 3×6 area)

Progressing within the realm of Mistria, as you finish narrative missions, villagers will inform you about fresh inventory items. Here’s a breakdown on how to obtain each item:

Where to Farm Ore

Look in the Mines

What Tools to Upgrade First in Fields of Mistria

Come springtime, you’ll gain access to the Blacksmithing system where you can craft ingots, tools, weapons, and armor. But remember, before you start creating anything, you need some ore. You can acquire ore at the Blacksmith Shop, with Copper Ore costing 50 Tesserae, Iron Ore costing 70 Tesserae, and Silver Ore costing 100 Tesserae. Alternatively, if you’d rather not spend your Tesserae, you can venture into the mines to mine ore for free.

As a gamer in the world of Mistria, I haven’t got the clearance yet to delve into the mines until I hit Stone Rank. In this Early Access phase, the mine shafts extend only down to Floor 60. However, I can gather copper, iron, and silver ore from these floors for my quest.

  • Copper Ore: Floors 1-19
  • Iron Ore: Floors 20-39
  • Silver Ore: Floors 40-59

Should you activate the dragon sculpture located on the upper level of the mine, it will grant you access to rewards (Mining Tier 2/3). These rewards guarantee an additional mineral fragment whenever you shatter a Mineral Node.

Required Materials for Every Tool (Early Access)

Mining Level, Time, and More

To create tools, it’s necessary to work at the anvil located outside the Blacksmith. Keep in mind that the process takes some in-game time, but you can speed up this step by investing Essence at Caldarus’s statue for blacksmithing bonuses. With blacksmithing unlocked, you gain access to all tool upgrades; however, you won’t be able to craft them unless you have all the required materials and satisfy the level prerequisites.

  • Copper Tools require Mining level 4
  • Iron Tools require Mining level 14
  • Silver Tools require Mining level 16

You can upgrade straight to a Silver Watering Can without needing to previously own or upgrade the lower-tier tools, such as the Worn Watering Can. All you need is 4 Silver Ingots and Blacksmithing level 16. So, there’s no requirement to craft the Bronze or Iron Watering Cans first.

Which Tools to Upgrade?

Which Ones Should You Not?

What Tools to Upgrade First in Fields of Mistria

You should prioritize the pickaxe and the watering can. When you’re first starting out, your crops are going to be your main source of income. The Copper Watering Can will water up to three tiles, thus shortening the amount of time you need to water each plant. The pickaxe will be important once you unlock the mines. You may not need a Copper Pickaxe on the first handful of floors, but when you break the Water Seal, you’ll want to have a stronger tool. The mines are ideal for farming ore to upgrade tools, making the pickaxe a very worthwhile tool to upgrade.

Afterwards, you’ll need to obtain a more powerful blade and an improved tool for felling trees. As the monsters in the mines grow stronger on lower levels, a stronger blade will help you dispatch them more efficiently. The tool for felling trees should be upgraded as it drains a significant amount of your energy. You’ll require a large quantity of wood for completing story quests and improving your Woodcrafting Skill.

There seems to be no compelling reason to enhance the insect-repelling tool, the Bug Net. The upgrade for the Copper/Iron/Silver Bug Net only changes its appearance compared to the worn version. Unless you prioritize aesthetics over function in your bug net, it might be wise to skip this upgrade. Additionally, consider avoiding crafting armor, at least the Copper Armor for now. During your mining expeditions, you’ll often discover chests containing armor pieces that are more robust than what you can currently create. If you aim to boost your defense, it would be prudent to accumulate Silver Ore for the Silver Armor components instead.
