The first season of the popular Apple TV+ sci-fi show “Severance” ended on a huge cliffhanger way back in 2022, leaving everyone – from viewers to the creative team – unaware it would take so long for a new season. Now, almost three years later, the series stands out as having one of the longest gaps between seasons in TV history, made even longer by the 2023 Hollywood strikes and the meticulous vision of its creators.

For those fans who may have let details slip their minds due to the extended gap between seasons, here’s a refresher before season two kicks off on January 17th. There were many intriguing elements at play as season one concluded, so this summary should help you get back up to speed and fully enjoy the new episodes.

Severance’s Premise

In case you’re catching up on the plot of Severance, this intriguing series revolves around a team working at Lumon Industries, a mysterious company with its own unique religious-like atmosphere. Employees here have experienced a process called “severance,” which involves an implant in their brains that divides their professional and personal lives, creating two independent minds. The individuals inside (the “innies”) are oblivious to their external life, while those outside (the “outies”) remain clueless about work activities.

In this peculiar realm, I, Mark Scout – once a distinguished professor – find myself as the primary protagonist. Grief-stricken after the untimely demise of my wife Gemma, I sought refuge in the process of ‘severance’, hoping to flee from the anguish that had engulfed me. However, this escape merely left me ensnared, trapped within both the realms of my inner self and the world around me.

My sister Devon and her partner Ricken, a man with lofty ideas yet kind intentions, endeavor to aid me in my recovery. Yet, I soon discover that momentarily escaping one’s sorrow for eight hours every workday is no substitute for genuine healing.

In the enigmatic “macrodata refinement” section, Mark works alongside John Turturro’s character, Irving, a devout Lumon employee; and Zach Cherry’s character, Dylan, an intensely competitive individual who desires the job’s peculiar benefits. At the beginning of the season, their colleague Petey (Yul Vazquez) unexpectedly fails to appear at work. He’s swiftly replaced by Helly (Britt Lower), a fresh employee who has trouble adapting to her new circumstances, and Mark is promoted to department head. The team is supervised by their eager boss Harmony Cobel (Patricia Arquette) and the intimidatingly cheerful middle manager Mr. Milchick (Tramell Tillman), who strive to keep their staff focused and in order.

Over time, the employees stuck within their work environments yearn for freedom, finding themselves trapped in jobs that leave no room for leisure or personal growth. Helly inspires her colleagues to reconsider their life’s meaning, while Irving’s world crumbles as he develops feelings for Burt (Christopher Walken), a transferred worker from another department. Ricken’s cheesy self-help book inadvertently reaches the trapped employees, sparking some surprising personal growth. On the other hand, Petey completes a reintegration process and contacts Mark, enlightening him about the anti-severance movement. Cobel monitors Mark, assuming the role of his bothersome neighbor and eventually securing employment as Devon’s lactation consultant.

The climax arrives when the inhabitants learn about the “emergency backup,” a switch that can bring their inner selves into the external world if needed. Dylan is brought out after his counterpart takes something from work, inadvertently revealing he has a child, prompting him to investigate his outside life. Armed with this information, the inhabitants devise a plan to reveal Lumon’s secrets to the public.

Innies on the Outside

In the final episode of the season, the characters execute their strategy: Dylan remains to initiate a backup plan for his teammates, instructing them to locate a reliable individual and confide in them about the ongoing situation. Meanwhile, Mark finds himself amidst Ricken’s book launch event, realizing that Devon is his sibling. He tries to seize a private moment with her to fill her in on the details. However, matters become more convoluted when Cobel, disguised as Devon’s breastfeeding advisor, uncovers the truth after Mark inadvertently uses her “inner circle” name.

In the morning, Irving stirs in his solitary home shared with his dogs, adorned by numerous enigmatic paintings of a shadowy corridor ending at an elevator, reminiscent of Lumon. Glancing around his house, he unearths a chest filled with studies about Lumon and the roster of former employees who had been terminated. He locates Burt’s address and sets out to visit him, only to learn that Burt is in a content relationship. Unfazed, he persists and knocks on Burt’s door.

The surprising truth about Helena Eagan, who is actually from the influential Eagan family that manages Lumon, comes to light. Upon awakening, she finds herself at Lumon’s yearly gala, poised to deliver a speech about her severance experience designed to promote its advantages. This presents an ideal moment for her to reveal the truth behind severance to the largest number of people possible.

On the divided floor, Dylan fights to keep a grip on the two switches that maintain the emergency plan running. Cobel alerts Milchick about their actions, and Milchick attempts to slice through the belt securing the control room door while simultaneously offering him fresh incentives and hinting at more information regarding his twin’s family life. Eventually, he succeeds in breaking through, overpowering Dylan and deactivating the emergency plan. However, not before Mark catches a glimpse of a photograph of Gemma, recognizing her as Ms. Casey (Dichen Lachman), the “wellness director” of the divided floor who was forced to retire earlier in the season. In his final moments before shutting down, he manages to display the picture and shout to Devon that his wife is still alive.

At the close of season one, the spectators were left pondering the repercussions of several events: Irving persistently knocking on Burt’s door, Helly revealing severance to a wealthy gathering, and Mark learning that his wife is apparently alive in some capacity.
